Foggy Chardonnay, a chef on the hill, a wine cave & tri-tip for dinner

Start at Presqu'ile, the hilltop estate near Highway 101 with a chef, a 260-foot wine cave and horseback rides. Presqu'ile recommends booking, so reserve ahead. Then pick Bien Nacido's Gatehouse for the famous vineyard, or drive Foxen Canyon Road to Foxen, which takes walk-ins. Finish with red-oak tri-tip in Orcutt.

What is the Santa Maria Valley known for?

Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, which the Santa Barbara Vintners call the AVA's flagship wines, with Syrah and Pinot Blanc close behind [3]. The valley is a funnel open to the Pacific, and the federal record describes a "maritime fringe" climate that keeps it foggy and windy [2]. The Santa Maria Valley visitor bureau calls it the Central Coast's first official AVA, with about 7,500 acres of vineyards [1].

The Santa Maria Valley is the northern end of Santa Barbara wine country. Presqu'ile is 43 minutes (30.6 mi) from Solvang Park by routed drive, so this is a day trip from the Santa Ynez Valley, not a stop on the way to lunch.

Which wineries are in the Santa Maria Valley itself?

Four, and they're very different. Presqu'ile is a modern hilltop winery with a kitchen, and Bien Nacido pours at The Gatehouse on the Bien Nacido Vineyard, which the visitor bureau says was planted in 1973 [13]. The other two are appointment-only: Paul Lato on Tepusquet Road [14] and the Ontiveros family's ranch, Ranchos de Ontiveros [15].

The Adobe Experience ($100 and up, by email) takes you inside an adobe built in 1857. Heads up: the visitor bureau lists the vineyard's Santa Maria Mesa Road address and shorter hours, but Bien Nacido's own site puts the tasting room at The Gatehouse on Rancho Tepusquet Road, so navigate there.

Which Santa Maria wineries are on Foxen Canyon Road?

Three, at the Santa Maria end of the Foxen Canyon Wine Trail, which the visitor bureau says runs 30 miles from Los Olivos [1]. Rancho Sisquoc and Riverbench lean on reservations; Foxen is the walk-in.

How do you drive the Foxen Canyon Wine Trail from Santa Maria?

Head southeast out of town and taste your way down Foxen Canyon Road, north to south. Tony Michael's own route runs from Santa Maria to Rancho Sisquoc and on to Foxen and its Shack. Riverbench sits on the way, so it's in the table too. Drive times are routed between stops with no traffic [12], and the trail itself runs about 30 miles from Santa Maria to Los Olivos [1].

From Santa Maria to Foxen is about an hour of driving (22.8 mi), so three stops make an easy afternoon. Foxen's own visit page says The Shack opens Friday to Sunday, 11am to 4pm [16]. Foxen also warns that ride-shares are hard to find out here, so pick a driver. For the southern half of the trail (Firestone, Andrew Murray, Fess Parker, Demetria and the full member list), see our Foxen Canyon Wine Trail guide.

Which Santa Barbara County wineries have wine caves?

At least four that let visitors in. Presqu'ile, in the Santa Maria Valley, takes its private Food & Wine Tour through a 260-foot wine cave [7]. The other three are in or near Santa Ynez. Star Lane calls its subterranean caves the only ones in the county, but it isn't alone: Grassini's private tours go through its barrel caves, and Sunstone pours by the glass in its stone barrel-aging caves [8][9][10].

Where can you taste Santa Maria Valley wine without driving up?

In Los Olivos and Solvang. Cambria grows its wines in the Santa Maria Valley but pours them in Los Olivos, and Lucas & Lewellen's tasting room is on Copenhagen Drive in Solvang. Riverbench also has a room in Santa Barbara at 137 Anacapa St.

Do Santa Maria Valley wineries need reservations?

Most want one. Presqu'ile and Riverbench recommend booking, Rancho Sisquoc encourages it and caps tables at six people (children and drivers count), and Bien Nacido seats tastings through Tock. Foxen needs no reservation for six or fewer. Mind the closing days: Presqu'ile shuts on Tuesday, and Bien Nacido and Rancho Sisquoc on Tuesday and Wednesday, so plan a Thursday to Monday visit. Not everyone in your group wants a flight? Rancho Sisquoc pours by the glass and bottle too; more wineries that do are in our just a glass or bottle list.

How do you make a day of it?

End with Santa Maria-style barbecue. The visitor bureau describes it as beef tri-tip seasoned with black pepper, salt and garlic and grilled over native red oak [4]. Drive times are routed, with no traffic [12].

  • Far Western Tavern, 300 East Clark Avenue in Old Town Orcutt: 13 minutes (5.2 mi) from Presqu'ile. The dining room is open Thursday 5pm–8pm, Friday and Saturday 5pm–9pm and Sunday 5pm–8pm, and it's closed Monday to Wednesday [5]. The visitor bureau dates it to 1958 [11]. Call (805) 937-2211.
  • The Swiss, 516 North Broadway in Santa Maria: 18 minutes (10.2 mi) from Presqu'ile, open 11am–9pm. It says it has served Santa Maria-style oak barbecue since the 1940s, and the rib-eye steak sandwich with pinquito beans is the lunch favorite [6]. Call 805-347-7800.
  • The Hitching Post in Casmalia, 3325 Point Sal Road, is the original of the Ostini family's two red-oak grills [11]. Call ahead for hours. Our Hitching Post 1 vs 2 guide compares them.

Coming from the south? Pair this with a morning at the horseback riding spots, or ride at Presqu'ile itself. For more booked experiences, see wine tasting experiences and unique wineries.

Where to stay after tasting in Santa Maria

Do Santa Maria Valley wineries need reservations? Most want one. Presqu'ile and Riverbench recommend booking, Rancho Sisquoc encourages it and caps groups at 6, and Bien Nacido books seated tastings on Tock. Foxen needs no reservation for parties of 6 or fewer, and Lucas & Lewellen in Solvang doesn't require one.

Which wineries in Santa Barbara County have wine caves? At least four you can visit. Presqu'ile in the Santa Maria Valley has a 260-foot cave on its $165 Food & Wine Tour. Riverbench is about 37 minutes from Santa Maria Town Center, Rancho Sisquoc 10 minutes further and Foxen 13 minutes past that, all routed with no traffic. Keep going south past Tres Hermanas and Zaca Mesa to finish in Los Olivos.

What is the Santa Maria Valley known for? Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The Santa Barbara Vintners call them the AVA's flagship wines, with Syrah and Pinot Blanc also doing well. The valley opens west to the Pacific, so it runs foggy and windy, and the visitor bureau calls it the Central Coast's first official AVA.
