About 33 miles, or 50 minutes without traffic, from downtown Santa Barbara to Solvang over Hwy 154 and San Marcos Pass. That's the fast way. The alternative stays on Highway 101 along the coast through Gaviota, then cuts in at Buellton: about 46 miles and an hour. From Santa Barbara Airport, which sits west of downtown near Goleta, it's about 35 miles and 51 minutes. The same numbers hold in reverse, for Solvang to Santa Barbara.

How do you get from Santa Barbara to Solvang?

Drive, and it takes under an hour. Without a car, you have four options:

• Amtrak Thruway bus. It stops at a curbside stop, 1630 Mission Drive in Solvang, with no shelter ^[5]. Amtrak only sells it with a train leg, so book a combination ticket ^[6]. Bus times change, so take them from amtrak.com when you book.
• Central Coast Shuttle from Santa Barbara Airport to the Motel 6 in Buellton: $57 one way or $110 round trip if you prepay 48 hours ahead, otherwise $64 and $122, plus a $3 fuel surcharge on every booking ^[7]. From Buellton, take the valley bus or a taxi to Solvang.

The Clean Air Express bus links Santa Maria, Lompoc and Buellton with Goleta and Santa Barbara, but it runs on a commuter schedule, so check its times before you plan a trip around it ^[8].

How do you get to Solvang from LA?

By car, about 128 miles from downtown Los Angeles, roughly 2 hours 40 minutes with no traffic: Highway 101 north through Ventura and Santa Barbara, then Hwy 154 over the mountains. From LAX it's about 130 miles and 2 hours 44 minutes.

Taking Highway 101 the whole way instead? Caltrans is rebuilding it through Buellton until March 2027, and until early November 2026 the northbound exit at Highway 246 is closed. Exit at Santa Rosa Road and follow the detour along Avenue of the Flags to 246 ^[23].

Without a car: take an Amtrak train to Santa Barbara and the Thruway bus to Solvang on one ticket, or ride Central Coast Shuttle from LAX to Buellton ($90 one way prepaid, plus the $3 fuel surcharge). Can you take the train to Solvang?

Not all the way: Solvang has no railway station. Amtrak's Solvang stop is a curbside bus stop at 1630 Mission Drive, with no shelter ^[5]. Visit Solvang says an Amtrak ticket to Solvang "MUST include a combo train and bus ride," with no bus-only tickets, for example a train from Los Angeles to Santa Barbara, then the Thruway bus ^[6]. Bus times change with the season, so check Amtrak's Solvang page for current departures. The stop has no ticket machine, restroom or waiting room, so buy your ticket before you go.

Getting from each airport to Solvang

From Santa Barbara Airport (SBA)

Eight rental car companies have counters inside baggage claim: Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National and Thrifty ^[9]. Uber and Lyft pick up in front of the terminal. For the valley, Central Coast Shuttle (805-928-1977) runs to Buellton ($57 one way prepaid, plus the $3 fuel surcharge) ^[7]. The airport also lists Santa Barbara Airbus, the Chumash Casino Shuttle and taxi companies ^[10].

From Santa Maria Airport (SMX)

Avis and Budget rent cars at the terminal, Uber and Lyft serve it, and Central Coast Shuttle stops there. The Breeze Bus picks up at the terminal and the Clean Air Express at the Radisson ^[11]. Parking in front of the terminal is free ^[2].

From San Luis Obispo Airport (SBP)

Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz and National rent cars here. The airport "strongly recommend[s]" booking ahead for evening and night arrivals, and says Uber and Lyft "can become more sparse during evening and night hours" ^[12].

From LAX

Central Coast Shuttle runs between LAX and the Motel 6 in Buellton: $90 one way or $170 round trip prepaid 48 hours ahead, $95 or $180 if not, plus the $3 fuel surcharge. One bag and a small carry-on ride free, and a second bag is $15 ^[7]. Its schedule is "subject to change," so check times when you book.

Getting around: Santa Ynez Valley Transit

The valley bus runs Monday to Saturday from 6:30am to about 7:20pm on two routes. The Express links Buellton, Solvang and Santa Ynez and stops at the Chumash Casino; the Los Olivos Loop runs from Solvang through Ballard to Los Olivos, and a transfer between them is free ^[13]. A ride costs $1.50 (exact change, since drivers can't make change), seniors pay $1.25, kids under 5 ride free with an adult, and an all-day Saturday pass is $4. On Sundays only Dial-A-Ride runs, 8:30am to 12:30pm and 1 to 4pm, at $2.25 a ride ^[14]. It won't get you to Los Alamos, and it stops early, so plan your ride home after dinner (see our wedding guest guide for late-night options).

Santa Ynez Airport (IZA): flying in privately

Santa Ynez Airport, also called Kunkle Field, is a public-use general aviation airport about a mile from the town of Santa Ynez, with no airline service. The FAA identifier is IZA. It is owned by the County of Santa Barbara and run by the Santa Ynez Valley Airport Authority (805-688-8390) ^[15][16].

• Hours: open 9am to 5:30pm daily, per the airport.
• Runway: 8/26, 2,804 × 75 feet, asphalt, medium-intensity edge lights. CTAF and UNICOM 122.8; AWOS 118.075.
• Fees: turbine or large aircraft landing fee $50 (or 50 gallons of fuel); overnight parking $35 for turbine or large aircraft, $20 for small aircraft.
• Fuel: 100LL and Jet-A. Truck service 8am to 6pm, and 100LL is available 24 hours from the automated system ^[15][16]. Prices change weekly, so call for today's.
• Getting into town: the airport says Uber and Lyft work throughout the valley and lists two taxis, 805 Wine Tours & Taxi Cab Service (805-325-3787) and Solvang Taxi and Wine Tours (805-686-8294) ^[17]. Santa Ynez is 5 minutes away, Solvang 11 and Los Olivos 12.

Driving an EV to Solvang: where to charge

Over Highway 154 from Santa Barbara, the federal station locator lists no public charger on the pass or at Lake Cachuma, so leave with range to spare. The first charger on the valley side is the 8-stall Santa Ynez Tesla Supercharger, on 154 at 2621 CA-154. Coming up Highway 101, the 20-stall Buellton Supercharger is at 555 McMurray Road. Non-Teslas can fast charge at Electrify America on Old Mission Drive in Solvang or at EVgo at El Rancho Marketplace. Every charger, plus hotels with chargers: EV charging in the Santa Ynez Valley.

Where is the Solvang Visitor Center, and where do you park?

The Solvang Visitor Center is at 1637 Copenhagen Drive, next to the public lot, and it's open 7 days a week from 9:30am to 5:30pm. Call (805) 465-7298 or email visitorcenter@cityofsolvang.com ^[18].

Parking is free. Solvang USA says parking is free "everywhere in the village," with three public lots at 1639 Copenhagen Drive, 464 Alisal Road and 1616 Oak Street ^[19]. Its FAQ adds that each lot has free restrooms and that EV charging stations are spread around the village ^[20]. City code bars leaving a car in a city public lot for more than 24 consecutive hours without a permit ^[21], so overnight hotel guests should park at the hotel.

What do old listings get wrong about getting to Solvang?

Here's what to ignore:

• "SBA is about 21 miles from Solvang." It's 34.8 miles by road, about 51 minutes.
• "LAX is 150 to 165 miles away." It's about 130 miles.
• "Surf Air flies from SBA." Santa Barbara Airport's airline page lists Alaska, American, Delta, Southwest and United only.
• Santa Ynez Airport's code. Some listings call it SQA. The FAA identifier is IZA.
• American from Santa Maria. Its Phoenix flights ended in May 2026, even though the airport's home page still mentions American.
