Those are times with the road to yourself. Leaving LA after 2 on a Friday, or heading back after 1 on a Sunday, treat them as the floor and add an hour of cushion before a dinner booking. Past Santa Barbara, Hwy 154 over San Marcos Pass is the direct way into Los Olivos and Santa Ynez. Full routes, airports and the Amtrak bus are in getting to Solvang.

The one-night plan

Saturday. Leave LA by 8 and you're in Los Olivos by 11. Park once and walk the day. Start at SAMsARA or Evan's Ranch, both walk-in, then Brewer-Clifton, Greg Brewer's Sta. Rita Hills room (Wednesday to Sunday). Lunch at Bar Le Côte, which opens at noon, with happy hour 3 to 5. Check in by 4. Dinner at Mattei's Tavern in the 1886 stagecoach stop on Railway Avenue, then walk back.

Sunday. Be on the road by 2 and, traffic allowing, you're home before 5, so the morning is yours. Start with bread and coffee at Bob's Well Bread in Ballard (from 8, kitchen closes at 3), a short drive away on Baseline Avenue. Then one estate on the way out: Brander (walk-ins always welcome, outside food fine) or Sunstone (book on weekends).

The two-night plan

Friday. Leave LA by 1. Check in at Skyview Los Alamos, the 1959 motel on the hill with a 21+ heated pool, and walk down to Bell Street, about 15 to 20 minutes on foot. Dinner at Bell's (prix fixe $125, reservation only) or Pico, then a last glass at Bar Alamo, open until 9, and the walk back up the hill to Skyview.

Saturday. Bob's Well Bread on Bell Street from 7. Then the Sta. Rita Hills loop: Alma Rosa's ranch house and Sanford on Santa Rosa Road, back along Highway 246 to Babcock and Melville, both walk-in. Our day-trip routes have the drive times. Early dinner at Hitching Post 2, 40 years in 2026: order the grilled artichoke.

Sunday. Down to Solvang and park free at 1639 Copenhagen Drive (parking rules). Taste at Lucas & Lewellen from 10, then lunch at peasants FEAST before noon, before the line. Home by early evening. More options in best lunch in Solvang.

Where to stay for two

  • Inn at Mattei's Tavern, Los Olivos. The big-night pick. Budget for the $75 nightly resort fee, which covers parking, bikes and Mercedes-Benz house cars.
  • Fess Parker Wine Country Inn, Los Olivos. Nineteen rooms with fireplaces on Grand Avenue; tastings at Fess Parker and Epiphany included.
  • The Ballard Inn, Ballard. Fifteen rooms, no TVs, wine and cheese hour 4 to 6.
  • Skyview, Los Alamos. Pool scene, free bikes, no resort fee.
  • The Landsby, Solvang. Park once, walk everything; a winery pass with complimentary tastings comes with the room.

Which places close which days

The valley runs on a Thursday to Sunday week. Plan a Monday to Wednesday trip around these:

Early closings catch people too. Most tasting rooms pour their last flight between 4 and 4:30, Bob's kitchen stops at 3 and peasants FEAST closes at 6. Industrial Eats in Buellton (daily, noon to 8) and Sanger in Solvang (Friday to Monday until 9:30pm) are the late fallbacks.

What to book, and when

  • Bell's: reservations open on the 1st of each month at 1pm for the following two months. Lunch is mostly walk-in, first come, first served, with limited advance reservations.
  • Hitching Post 2: reservations strongly encouraged, by phone after 10am or OpenTable.
  • Hilltop estates: The Hilt, Dovecote and Brave & Maiden are by appointment only. See walk-in wine tasting for everywhere that isn't.
  • A driver: if both of you are tasting, book a licensed one. Prices for two are in Santa Ynez Valley wine tours.

Doing it without a car

There is no train to Solvang. Amtrak sells a train plus Thruway bus ticket (no bus-only fare) that ends at the curbside stop at 1630 Mission Drive in Solvang. Central Coast Shuttle runs LAX to the Motel 6 in Buellton for $90 one way, prepaid 48 hours ahead. In the valley, Santa Ynez Valley Transit is $1.50 a ride Monday to Saturday, roughly 6:30am to 7pm, with Dial-A-Ride only on Sunday, and it doesn't reach Los Alamos. Base yourself in Solvang or Los Olivos and walk.

Your next move

Good to know

Is one night enough in the Santa Ynez Valley? For one town and a good dinner, yes: arrive Saturday by 11, taste in Los Olivos, eat there and walk back to your room. Two nights lets you add a second area, Los Alamos or the Sta. Rita Hills, and a Sunday lunch in Solvang without racing the drive home.

What day of the week is best for a Santa Ynez Valley weekend? Thursday to Sunday. Monday to Wednesday is when the valley thins out: Bell's and Bob's Well Bread close Tuesday and Wednesday, peasants FEAST and Bar Le Côte close Monday and Tuesday, and Hitching Post 2 closes Tuesday. Friday and Saturday nights are when every kitchen is open.

Can you get to Solvang from LA without a car? Partly. There is no train to Solvang. Amtrak sells a train plus Thruway bus ticket that ends at the Solvang curbside stop, 1630 Mission Drive, and Central Coast Shuttle runs LAX to Buellton for $90 one way prepaid. Once there, the valley bus is $1.50 but stops around 7pm and runs Sunday as Dial-A-Ride only.

How far ahead should you book dinner? Bell's releases tables on the first of each month at 1pm for the following two months, so a Saturday there means booking the day they open. Hitching Post 2 strongly encourages reservations by phone after 10am or OpenTable. Mattei's Tavern books on its site. peasants FEAST takes no reservations at all.
