Figueroa Mountain Brewing
Looking for the beer? Figueroa Mountain Brewing Co. is named for this mountain, which its founders could see from their family home in Los Olivos. It has taprooms in Buellton, Los Olivos, Santa Barbara and Westlake Village (per figmtnbrew.com). See our Figueroa Mountain Brewing Buellton guide and the Solvang and Buellton breweries guide. The rest of this page is about the mountain.
Make a day of it: Los Olivos, the mountain, a pint
- Morning: pick up picnic food in Los Olivos (see Los Olivos restaurants). There's no food on the mountain.
- Midday: drive Figueroa Mountain Road to Figueroa Campground and the lookout area, 13.6 mi and about 53 min. Davy Brown Campground is another 10.4 mi, about 41 min, on Sunset Valley Road.
- Afternoon: back down for a tasting on the Foxen Canyon Wine Trail or in Los Olivos.
- Evening: a pint at Figueroa Mountain Brewing in Los Olivos or Buellton.
The Figueroa Mountain scenic drive
Figueroa Mountain Road leaves Highway 154 near Los Olivos, crosses ranch country, then climbs into the national forest. The Forest Service describes panoramic views of the San Rafael Wilderness from the top. Near Figueroa Campground, Figueroa Lookout Road leads to the Pino Alto and Cumbre day-use areas and the Figueroa Lookout. Beyond the campground, the road continues as Sunset Valley Road toward Davy Brown Campground. Happy Canyon Road is the other way up from the Santa Ynez side.
The road is narrow and winding. Allow far more time than the mileage suggests, and fill up before you leave Los Olivos.
When do the Figueroa Mountain poppies bloom?
Poppies and lupine near Figueroa Mountain in April. The Forest Service gives February through April as the season.
The Forest Service's Figueroa Mountain wildflower page gives springtime, February through April, as the season. Its wildflower guide says blooms normally start in late February or early March and continue into April or May. Expect California poppies, sky lupine, goldfields, Indian paintbrush and chocolate lilies, with shooting stars in late March.
Every year is different. In 2026, USFS botanist Helen Tarbet reported early blooms in late January and early February, then slides from February storms that closed the road for about 3 weeks, then snow. Her March 10, 2026 update said poppies were less plentiful than in past years and she doubted a superbloom, but sky lupine was abundant. The Forest Service posts updates every couple of weeks in spring, so check the latest Figueroa wildflower update before driving up.
The Forest Service asks visitors not to stop or park in the middle of the road or block any part of it, because it holds up traffic and emergency vehicles. Use the turnouts.
Hikes on Figueroa Mountain
The Forest Service lists Figueroa Campground as a central spot for trailheads including the Davy Brown/Fir Canyon and Ballard trails. The Pino Alto Day Use Area has a nature trail, and the Figueroa Lookout gives views of the San Rafael Wilderness. Check current conditions with the Santa Lucia Ranger District (805-925-9538) before you go, since storm damage closes trails and sites.
Did Lance Armstrong train on Figueroa Mountain?
Yes. Lance Armstrong and his team trained here, and Figueroa Mountain was a regular climb. Every January from 2003, the U.S. Postal Service team (Discovery Channel from 2005) held its preseason camp in Solvang, the Lompoc Record reported in 2007. The 2004 team presentation was held at the camp too, VeloNews reported.
- Base camp: the Royal Scandinavian Inn, with the team truck in the rear parking lot as the staging area. It's now Hotel Corque, at 400 Alisal Road, renamed after the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians bought and remodeled it (Santa Maria Times, 2009).
- The rides: the Los Angeles Times (Jan 21, 2005) described 10-day camps, four-hour rides and 100-mile days past vineyards and cattle ranches. VeloNews (Jan 30, 2006) reported "almost-daily climbs of Figueroa Mountain". The Santa Maria Times (Jan 30, 2007) said rides ran from two hours to six, "punctuated with multiple trips over Figueroa Mountain".
- The favorite loop: in a January 2005 Cyclingnews diary, pro John Lieswyn (Health Net, camped in Solvang the same month) described Highway 246 east, Armour Ranch Road, 14 miles of Happy Canyon Road up the back of Figueroa, then down Figueroa Mountain Road and home on Ballard Canyon. A reporter told him "the Discovery boys seemed to like this climb the best as well."
- In town: riders walked to the Bulldog Cafe, next to the Hans Christian Andersen Museum, whose owner baked them pineapple carrot cakes for birthdays and turned down $4,000 for a signed Armstrong poster (LA Times, 2005). Armstrong was also seen at the Los Olivos Cafe (Lompoc Record, 2007).
- The valley legend: Cyclist Jeff Stevenson, then 56, tagged along on a 120-mile team ride. Team director Johan Bruyneel handed him candy bars from the car, and on the last hill Roberto Heras put a hand on his back and pushed him up it (LA Times, 2005).
You do have the straight paths, but then you also have the rolling hills that help you work on your climbing skills.
Armstrong told the Lompoc Record the valley worked because "you do have the straight paths, but then you also have the rolling hills that help you work on your climbing skills." In January 2007, already retired, he rode part of a camp ride in team kit, and a Cyclingnews photo from that camp shows the team heading for an ascent of Figueroa Mountain.
The titles. In 2012 the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency banned Armstrong for life and disqualified his results from August 1, 1998, including his seven Tour de France titles.
The Solvang time trial. From 2006 the camps had a home race to prepare for, the Tour of California (Lompoc Record). Its 2007 Solvang time trial ran 14.5 miles through Ballard and Los Olivos (Lompoc Record), the Discovery team rode the course three times in camp (Cyclingnews), and Levi Leipheimer won the Solvang time trial three years running (Santa Barbara Independent, Feb 20, 2009).

Figueroa Campground sits at about 3,300 feet among oaks, pines and red manzanita, 12.5 miles up Figueroa Mountain Road from Los Olivos, per the Forest Service. It has 35 sites with fire rings, barbecues and picnic tables, vault toilets and room for trailers up to 25 feet. There are no hook-ups and no drinking water. The Forest Service lists $30 a night plus $10 per extra vehicle; most sites book on Recreation.gov and a few are first-come, first-served. Loop 2 is temporarily closed. It isn't allowed at day-use areas or trailhead parking. Pack out all trash and human waste, and check fire restrictions first.
The lookout: Figueroa Lookout Road, a dirt road off Figueroa Mountain Road about 13 miles from Highway 154, climbs to the Figueroa Lookout day-use site on the summit. It has a picnic site, two vault toilets and views over the San Rafael Wilderness and the Santa Ynez Valley. It's day use only, needs an Adventure Pass ($5 a day or $30 a year) or an interagency pass, and may close in wet winter weather. The summit is about 4,530 feet; the National Geodetic Survey mark on top reads 4,534 ft.
