What do you do at OstrichLand?

You feed the birds. The farm hands you a feeding bowl, and its own advice is to "stand back, hold on to the feeding bowl" and let the ostriches and emus come to you. There are more than 80 ostriches and 70 emus on 32 acres, plus a gift shop.

Eggs are seasonal: ostrich eggs in spring and summer, emu eggs in winter. Call to check supply, since the farm doesn't list them online when stock is low.

Where to eat and drink near OstrichLand

Two stops on the same stretch of Highway 246 that most visitors drive past. Distances are from the farm.

  • HP 2 You lunch at the Hitching Post Wines tasting room, 420 E Highway 246, next to the Hitching Post 2 restaurant: about 0.4 miles, 1 minute by car. The restaurant serves dinner only; this is its separate lunch, a "hot-off-the-grill Hitching Post 2 lunch" with or without wine tasting, Wednesday to Sunday 11:30am to 3pm (closed Monday and Tuesday). No reservations under eight. The current menu includes the grilled artichoke "house specialty" ($15), an oak-grilled burger ($15), tri-tip or pulled-pork street tacos ($14) and a pulled pork sandwich ($16). Takeout too: 805-688-0676.
  • Kaena at the Ranch, 800 E Highway 246: about 0.7 miles, 2 minutes by car. Open 11am to 5pm, with free live music on some Saturdays: Kelly Fitzgerald on Dec 5 (12:30 to 3:30pm). Its calendar lists no food trucks right now, but you can bring outside food.

The walk to the tasting room is about 0.4 miles (8 minutes) and to Kaena about 0.7 miles (15 minutes), but both run along the highway, so most people drive.

How much are OstrichLand tickets, and do you need to book?

The farm doesn't post a price list on its site. The SLO Tribune reported $7 per person plus $1 for each food bowl in May 2026, and the farm says rates go up on most holidays and three-day weekends.

Most days you can buy tickets at the farm. At busy times bookings may be required in advance, so check the site or call 805-686-9696 before a holiday visit. Booking online is always an option.

How long do you need at OstrichLand?

The farm doesn't give a visit length. The visit is feeding the birds along the fences and looking round the gift shop, which fits before lunch in Solvang, as the farm itself suggests. Wear closed-toe shoes: the paths are dirt and gravel.

Is OstrichLand worth it?

It's cheap, quick and the birds come right to the fence. The ticket gets you 32 acres, more than 80 ostriches and 70 emus, and a feeding bowl, open every day 9am to 6pm. Trudy and Adair Brown have run it since buying the farm in 2003; Colin and Rosie Cooper started it in the early 1990s. You can't ride the ostriches; the farm's answer is "Nope!"

Is OstrichLand wheelchair accessible?

The farm says all visitors can view and feed the birds, and it has ADA portable restrooms. It asks you to call ahead with specific needs.

Tips before you go

  • Make it the first stop: the farm suggests heading into Solvang for pastries afterward.
  • No alcohol of any kind is allowed on the farm.
  • Holiday weekends mean higher rates and tighter parking.
  • Keep dogs well back from the feeding fences.
