Four loops that beat closing time

Walk-in vs booking

Nobody paid to be listed.

Go Friday or Saturday, when nearly every Lompoc room is open. Park once at Chestnut Court: Montemar, Camins 2 Dreams, Sandhi (reserve), Ampelos and Capulín for lunch are all within a 7-minute walk. Then drive Highway 246 to the walk-in estates, Melville, Babcock and Dierberg. Tyler, Spear and The Hilt need appointments.

Make a day of it: pick a loop

  • Loop A, Ghetto to the estates (Fri/Sat): Lompoc tasting, a Capulín lunch, the seasonal lavender farm, then Melville and Dierberg, ending at Hitching Post 2. 21 mi, about 45 min of travel in total.
  • Loop B, Santa Rosa Road to a Lompoc sunset (Friday): Alma Rosa, Peake, Lafond, Sanford, then Longoria until 7pm and sushi. 15.6 mi, about 39 min.
  • Loop C, the full Sta. Rita Hills circle (Thu to Sat) from Buellton. 37 mi, about 75 min of driving.
  • Loop D, Lompoc on foot (Fri/Sat): about 0.6 miles of walking between rooms, plus two short drives.
  • Beach or flowers on the same day? Surf Beach is 19 minutes from the Ghetto by car, and from April to September the flower fields on Central Avenue are 9 minutes away.
  • Rocket launch tonight? Finish the day at a viewing spot: see the live Vandenberg launch list. Pick a designated driver, and plan on four tastings a day at most.
  • Staying longer? Our things to do in Lompoc guide adds the La Purísima tour, the Old Town murals and skydiving, with drive times from Solvang and Buellton.

Not pinned, because we couldn't confirm a public address or hours: Domaine de la Côte (appointment only, by email), Fiddlehead (advance appointment only since July 1, 2025), D'Alfonso-Curran (appointment only, Santa Rosa Road), and Flying Goat and Transcendence, which do have Lompoc tasting rooms, but we couldn't confirm current hours on their sites.

What is the Sta. Rita Hills Wine Center?

A building of tasting rooms at 300 North 12th Street in Lompoc, at the corner of Highway 1 and Highway 246, a 7-minute walk from the Wine Ghetto courtyard. Explore Lompoc describes it as four tasting rooms with a patio and regular events, and says its wineries can arrange private tastings by appointment outside normal hours.

  • Kessler-Haak: walk-ins Friday and Saturday, 2pm to 5pm.
  • Zotovich (Suite 1D): Wednesday to Saturday, noon to 5pm; Sunday to Tuesday by appointment. Pet friendly, with patio seating.
  • Chanin: tastings by appointment only.
  • Lunch: Capulín Eats & Provisions, Tuesday to Saturday, 7am to 4pm (5pm Friday and Saturday). Other Lompoc kitchens' hours by day are on our open-today grid.

Time it for Friday or Saturday afternoon, when Kessler-Haak and Zotovich are both pouring.

White Buffalo Land Trust: regenerative Pinot from Jalama Canyon

No tasting room here, but it's the vineyard behind Sandhi's White Buffalo Land Trust Pinot Noir. White Buffalo Land Trust, a nonprofit, bought the 1,000-acre Jalama Canyon Ranch in 2021 and runs it as a center for regenerative agriculture. It's on Jalama Road, about 10 minutes' drive south of Lompoc: 6.0 mi · 10 min from Sandhi's tasting room.

  • The vineyard: 5 acres planted in 2008, with 4.5 acres of Pinot Noir and half an acre of Chardonnay. Since taking over in April 2021, the trust has stopped using chemical pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers. Instead it grazes goats or sheep before the season, plants cover crops and hedgerows, spreads compost and puts up raptor perches. It says it's close to finishing USDA Organic certification and will seek Regenerative Organic Certification next.
  • The wine: Sandhi buys the whole crop and makes one White Buffalo Land Trust Pinot Noir each year, co-fermented with the Chardonnay since 2022. Sandhi says the full proceeds of the wine's sales go back to the trust. The 2024 vintage is $65 on Sandhi's site (91% Pinot Noir, 9% Chardonnay, Santa Barbara County appellation). Sandhi was founded by Rajat Parr and Sashi Moorman, and DJ Bilsky is its winemaker today.
  • Tasting it: buy it online from Sandhi. We couldn't confirm it's poured at Sandhi's Wine Ghetto room, so ask when you book. The trust's own events pour it too: special vintages were served at its Bounty Benefit Dinner at Rosewood Miramar Beach on Sept 20, 2026.
  • Visiting the ranch: only at scheduled events, never as a drop-in. Community Field Days run from spring to fall, 10am to 1pm (in 2026, on Saturdays June 13 and Sept 12): a walking tour of the pastures, vineyard and oak woodlands, then a tasting of the trust's Figure Ate foods. They're family-friendly, with a suggested donation of $25 per adult, and you have to RSVP. A Fall Open House with live music and a lunch made with ranch ingredients has run every October since 2024 (2026: Oct 10).
  • Next on the calendar: a $175 hands-on Beaver Dam Analogs workshop on Saturday, Nov 7, 2026, 9am to 4pm, lunch included (details). Field Day dates for 2027 aren't posted yet; watch its events page or join its volunteer list. See also our valley events calendar.

Don't drive here for a tasting

These names come up in Lompoc searches and older lists, but they don't pour at a Lompoc address:

  • Pali Wine Co. closed its Wine Ghetto tasting room at 1501 E. Chestnut Court in 2025. Its walk-in rooms are in Santa Barbara's Funk Zone, San Diego and Anaheim; in Lompoc it offers guided cellar tastings at the winery, 1034 W. Aviation Drive, by request (details).
  • Brewer-Clifton's tasting room is now at 2367 Alamo Pintado Ave in Los Olivos (see Los Olivos tasting).
  • Foley Estates on Highway 246 has no public tasting at the estate. Foley pours on Saturdays and Sundays at Lincourt Vineyards, during club pick-up windows.
  • Kita and Windrun: we couldn't find a working website for either, so neither is listed.

Getting in and out: the roads

  • From Highway 101: leave at Buellton and take Highway 246 west. It runs past Dierberg's Drum Canyon turn, Melville, Babcock and Tyler to the east side of Lompoc. Buellton to the Wine Ghetto is 17.5 mi · 27 min.
  • Drum Canyon Road leaves Highway 246 by Spear and climbs over the hills to Los Alamos, past Dierberg's tasting room: the junction to Bell Street is 9.4 mi · 23 min. It's narrow, one lane each way. See the Drum Canyon wine route, with Pence and day plans both ways, and Los Alamos wine tasting at the far end.
  • Santa Rosa Road is the parallel route on the south side of the Santa Ynez River, through Alma Rosa, Peake, Lafond, Sanford and The Hilt. It meets Highway 1 just south of Lompoc: The Hilt to Longoria is 3.4 mi · 6 min. Our Santa Rosa Road wine route has all seven stops, including D'Alfonso-Curran and Vega, with drive times and day plans.
  • From Solvang: 20.3 mi · 32 min to the Wine Ghetto. From La Purísima: 4.6 mi · 11 min to the Wine Center.
  • Drive times are without traffic. Outside town these are country roads, so add a margin and don't plan legs to the minute.
