The station sits at the valley's warmer eastern end. Winemakers count the western side, around Buellton and the Sta. Rita Hills, as the cool zone, and Ballard Canyon, Los Olivos and Happy Canyon as the warm one.

The best time to visit

April and May are the sweet spot: highs of 76°F to 80°F, the last rain behind you, green hills and wildflowers on Figueroa Mountain. November is underrated: highs near 75°F, harvest done, the first rain greening the hills, and Julefest starting at the end of the month. Summer is reliably dry but hot, with about 19 days over 90°F in July; plan wineries for the morning and the pool for the afternoon. Winter brings most of the rain and frosty mornings, but average highs are still 67°F to 68°F, so a clear day between storms is pleasant.

When harvest happens

Picking usually runs from late summer into October, and the date moves every year. 2026 was the earliest harvest anyone in the county could remember, the Santa Barbara Independent reported: Brave & Maiden in Santa Ynez picked its first Sauvignon Blanc on August 25, about two weeks ahead of normal. The cool western Sta. Rita Hills ran early that year, while warmer Ballard Canyon, Los Olivos and Happy Canyon stayed closer to their usual timing. Harvest weekends are busy; book tastings ahead with our winery guide.

Wildflowers and flower fields

The Forest Service puts Figueroa Mountain's wildflower season from February to April, starting in late February or early March, with poppies and lupine on the slopes after a wet winter. Down in Lompoc, the commercial flower fields bloom from April to September. Bald eagles winter around Lake Cachuma, though the county's lake cruises are out of service until further notice.

Does it ever snow?

Not on the valley floor, where NOAA's normal snowfall is zero. Frost is common, though, with about 19 nights a year at or below freezing, mostly December and January. When a cold storm does dust the San Rafael Mountains, people drive up Figueroa Mountain to see it. In February 2023 the Forest Service closed the road, and the Santa Barbara Independent reported $150 tickets for drivers who moved the barricades. Check road status before you go.

What to pack

  • Layers, all year. Even in August, a 7am balloon launch or an evening on a winery patio can be in the 40s or 50s. Bring a fleece or light down jacket.
  • Sun protection from May to October: hat, sunscreen and water for vineyard walks.
  • Closed-toe shoes for vineyard tours and ziplining, where sandals and Crocs aren't allowed.
  • A real coat from December to February for nights near freezing, and a rain shell for January to March.
  • Boots are fine for dinner. The valley is casual; The Victor's own line is "Boots, buckles, and big hats welcome!"

Good to know
