Santa Rosa Road day plans

Pick an end. The east end, near Buellton, has four stops within a mile of each other plus lunch at Vega. The west end, near Lompoc, has The Hilt and the appointment-only cellars. Trying all seven in a day means rushing, since most tastings run an hour or more.

Half day: Buellton end

  1. 11am, Peake Ranch. The $50 Classic Tasting starts at 11am. Peake Ranch is 5.8 mi · 14 min from central Buellton.
  2. 12:30pm, Alma Rosa, next door. 0.2 mi · 1 min. Book the $50 El Jabali tasting, or the $75 vineyard ride if you have two hours. Thursday to Sunday, Lafond is 0.8 mi west and needs no booking (open until 4pm).
  3. Late lunch, Vega. 4.8 mi · 11 min east. Feed the animals, and on Friday to Sunday afternoons take the tractor ride. Central Buellton is 1.0 mi · 2 min away.

Want the Caracol hike? The hike only starts at 10am and runs 2 to 2.5 hours, so put Alma Rosa first and move Peake to its 1pm slot.

Full day: east end and dinner

Best on a Friday or Saturday.

  1. 10am, Sanford. 10.8 mi · 27 min from Buellton along Santa Rosa Road. The $40 estate tasting takes about an hour.
  2. 11:30am, Lafond. 4.3 mi · 11 min east, open from 11am Thursday to Sunday, no booking needed.
  3. 1pm, Peake Ranch with a picnic. 1.0 mi · 3 min. Peake welcomes outside food, so bring lunch to its 1pm Classic Tasting.
  4. 3pm, Alma Rosa. Next door, with appointments until 4pm.
  5. Dinner, Vega. 4.8 mi · 11 min. Vega is open until 8pm on Fridays and Saturdays (5pm the rest of the week, on its fall hours).

Full day: west end to Lompoc

  1. 10am, Sanford. Open daily from 10am. On Friday to Sunday, the ATV vineyard ride goes at 11am and 1pm.
  2. 11:30am, D'Alfonso-Curran. 1.8 mi · 5 min west. Request the $40 Cellar Experience by email in advance and allow 1 to 1.5 hours. Bring a layer.
  3. 1:30pm, The Hilt. 4.6 mi · 11 min west. A tasting, or the bottle or by-the-glass reservation if you're done with flights.
  4. Late afternoon, Lompoc. The Hilt to the Wine Center is 2.2 mi · 4 min. Late lunch at Capulín (until 4pm, 5pm Friday and Saturday; closed Sunday and Monday), then the walk-in rooms of the Lompoc Wine Ghetto. Back to Buellton on Highway 246 is 16.3 mi · 25 min, so pick a driver.

The seven stops

Seven Santa Rosa Road wineries pour for the public. The list runs west to east, from Highway 1 near Lompoc to Highway 101 in Buellton (the three western stops have Lompoc addresses, the four eastern ones Buellton).

Where Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir began: Sanford says its Sanford & Benedict vineyard was planted to the first Pinot Noir vines in Santa Barbara County, in 1971. The $40 estate tasting is the easy pick, and the $75 Parallel Vineyard tasting puts three Sanford & Benedict wines against three from neighboring La Rinconada. For the vines themselves, Tock lists a 90-minute all-terrain vineyard (ATV) ride for up to four. It's open every day, so it anchors a Monday to Wednesday trip, when Lafond is closed.

The Hilt by the glass

Yes, if you book it. The Hilt's visit page says you can "simply reserve a cozy spot in our beautiful setting to pop open a bottle of wine and enjoy at your leisure," and its Tock page has a Bottle or By the Glass Reservation for parties of two to six, with no price listed for the reservation itself. The Barn pours both The Hilt (Pinot Noir and Chardonnay) and Jonata (Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Syrah). The reservation is the right move at the end of a west-end day, when another flight is too much. Guests must be 21 or over, and there's no outside food and no animals except service animals.

Loop it with Highway 246

Drive Santa Rosa Road one way and Highway 246 the other. The two roads run on either side of the Santa Ynez River and meet in Buellton and (via Highway 1) in Lompoc. The full loop from central Buellton is 36.2 mi, about 71 minutes behind the wheel. The Highway 246 side has Pence, Spear, Dierberg's Drum Canyon tasting room, Babcock and Melville, all in our Drum Canyon wine route; from The Hilt to Babcock is 9.1 mi · 14 min.

Which way round? Coming up Highway 101 from the south, start on Santa Rosa Road: Buellton's Highway 246 northbound off-ramp and southbound on-ramp are closed until early to mid-November for the 101 rebuild [2]. Check QuickMap on the day, then finish at Babcock on Highway 246, open until 5:30pm on Fridays and Saturdays.

Times are without traffic, so on a winding two-lane road treat them as the minimum. End to end, Santa Rosa Road runs about 20 minutes longer than Highway 246. If The Hilt is your only stop, Highway 246 and Highway 1 get you there faster.

What the road is like

Santa Rosa Road is two lanes, rural and rough in places. Planet Ultra, which runs the Solvang Century bike ride on it, warns riders to "expect some bumpy, less than perfect pavement (especially on Santa Rosa Road and Foxen Canyon)," and in 2026 it rerouted its half-century course "until SB County does some work on Santa Rosa Road" [1]. Expect cyclists, since the Solvang Century ride uses it. Santa Rosa Road runs along the south side of the Santa Ynez River; The Hilt's sister winery Jonata places the Barn "near the intersection of historic Highway 1 and Santa Rosa Road," which is the Lompoc end. Check the county's road closures map before you head out [5].

Critics and press

Critic scores and press for the stops on this route, credited to each publication.

Jonata's scores appear on The Hilt because The Barn pours both estates. More in top-rated wines by area.

Not on this road

Some names on vineyard maps and older lists don't pour on Santa Rosa Road. Here's where to find them instead.

  • Sanford & Benedict and La Rinconada are Sanford's vineyards. You taste them at Sanford, side by side in the $75 Parallel tasting, or ride through both on the ATV tour.
  • Foley's Rancho Santa Rosa is on Highway 246, not Santa Rosa Road, and Foley's site points visitors to weekend pop-up tastings at Lincourt Vineyards.
  • Ampelos pours at its Lompoc tasting room, 312 N 9th Street, not at the vineyard. See the Lompoc Wine Ghetto.
  • Kessler-Haak runs vineyard tastings by appointment, but at 1700 Gypsy Canyon Drive off Highway 246.
  • Pali Wine Co. lists tasting rooms in Santa Barbara's Funk Zone, San Diego and Anaheim, none on Santa Rosa Road.
  • Sea Smoke, another Sta. Rita Hills estate, says it doesn't regularly offer winery visits.

Good to know

How long does it take to drive Santa Rosa Road? From The Hilt to Vega, stop to stop, is about 16.5 miles and 42 minutes of driving. Buellton to the Lompoc Wine Center is 19.1 miles and about 45 minutes this way, against 16.3 miles and 25 minutes on Highway 246 without traffic. It's slower because it's a two-lane country road.

Do I need reservations for the Santa Rosa Road wineries? For some. The Hilt is appointment only and D'Alfonso-Curran takes prepaid appointments with no walk-ins. Peake Ranch strongly recommends booking, and Sanford recommends it but welcomes walk-ins. Alma Rosa takes appointments and says walk-ins are welcome. Lafond doesn't require a reservation, and Vega has a walk-in waitlist on Tock.

Which Santa Rosa Road wineries are open on Monday and Tuesday? Sanford, Alma Rosa's estate, Peake Ranch and Vega are open every day. Lafond is open Thursday to Sunday only. The Hilt and D'Alfonso-Curran work by appointment, so check their booking pages for your date.

Can you just have a glass of wine at The Hilt? Yes. Besides its $45 to $65 tastings, The Hilt takes a Bottle or By the Glass Reservation on Tock for parties of two to six, a reserved spot at The Barn to open a bottle or order glasses. No price is listed for the reservation itself. Everyone must be 21 or over, and no animals or outside food are allowed.

Are the Santa Rosa Road wineries dog friendly? Some are. Peake Ranch says it's dog friendly, Sanford welcomes dogs (but not on its ATV tour) and Vega takes well-behaved dogs once you sign its dog policy. The Hilt allows no animals except service animals. Alma Rosa, Lafond and D'Alfonso-Curran don't publish a dog policy.

Where can I eat on Santa Rosa Road? Vega Vineyard & Farm is the only restaurant on the road, with lunch daily and weekend brunch. Peake Ranch lets you bring a picnic and sells cheese and crackers, and Alma Rosa sells cheese, cured meats and caviar. The Hilt doesn't allow outside food. At the Lompoc end, Capulín in the Wine Center is open Tuesday to Thursday 7am to 4pm and Friday and Saturday 7am to 5pm (closed Sunday and Monday).

Can kids come wine tasting on Santa Rosa Road? At some stops. Vega has a kids' play area and farm animals, Peake Ranch welcomes children with a kids-zone reservation, and Sanford welcomes under-21s who are on the reservation. The Hilt and Alma Rosa are 21 and over.
