The tree lighting

Friday, December 4, 2026, starting at 5:30pm in Solvang Park, 1630 Mission Drive [1][2]. Fossemalle Dance Studio dancers perform and there's caroling, then the tree and the whole park light up together. Stay for the light show, which plays on the hour.

What time is the Julefest Parade?

Saturday, December 5, 2026, from 11am to about 1:30pm. More than 400 participants in over 50 entries come through the village: marching bands, horses, dancers, classic cars and floats. The 2026 theme is "Nisser & Nordic Nights," and Santa visits afterward [1]. The City's calendar gives the location as First Street and Copenhagen Drive [2].

Is Solvang good for Christmas?

If you like your Christmas small, walkable and a little storybook, yes. Solvang USA notes that Oprah Daily named it one of the "Most Magical Christmas Towns and Villages Across the World" [1]. With kids, the easiest wins don't need a ticket: the nightly light show, the nisser hunt (pick up clues at the Solvang Visitor Center) and the Saturday carolers. If you're coming midweek, make it a Wednesday, when the Maker's Market sets up beside the farmers market.

Two ticketed walking tours leave from the Solvang Visitor Center. Nisse Mischief & Merriment is the one for kids: a guide in nisse costume, stories and a bit of mischief ($28.52 on Eventbrite). Hygge, Holiday & Hans Christian Andersen is the grown-up version, by candlelight ($65.87) [13][14]. Both go ahead rain or shine.

More December nights out

Julefest isn't the only thing lit up in December. These fit around the nightly shows in Solvang Park:

  • SYV Holiday Lights Festival, December 4 to 6, 11 to 13 and 18 to 20: the Santa Ynez Valley Botanic Garden, at the west end of River View Park in Buellton (9 minutes' drive from Solvang Park), turns into a half-acre maze of lights from 5 to 9pm, with Santa, falling snow, carolers and mulled wine for the 21-and-over crowd. Online it's $30 for 13 and up and $15 for 12 and under, plus fees; at the door, $35 and $20. Under 2 free, parking free, rain or shine, and no tickets get added once it sells out [12]. See our Botanic Garden guide.
  • Elf the Musical, December 11 and 12: at the 700-seat Solvang Festival Theater, 420 Second Street, two blocks from Solvang Park. It's outdoors and rain or shine, so bring a blanket, and leave the umbrella at home; they're banned [11]. See our Solvang Theaterfest guide.
  • Winterlight at Alisal Ranch, Sunday, December 13: one of the few Alisal Ranch evenings open to non-guests. Hundreds of candles, a multi-course dinner and Stolpman Vineyards wines, from 6pm. $175 a person before tax and service, 21 and over, booked through Ranch Concierge at 800-425-4725. Every Winterlight dinner sold out last season [18]. The ranch is a 7-minute drive south of the village; more in our Alisal Ranch guide.
  • Los Olivos Olde Fashioned Christmas: the Rotary Club of Los Olivos describes it as a first-Saturday-of-December tradition: the town lights the "tree" on the flagpole in the middle of town, Santa visits, and Rotarians pour free hot chocolate in Lavinia Campbell Park [21]. The 2026 date isn't posted yet, so check before you make the 14-minute drive.

Line up the weekends and you can do the tree lighting and the garden on December 4, or Elf and the garden on December 11 or 12.

Is Solvang still decorated after Christmas?

Yes, through January 3, 2027. From December 26 the light show switches to "New Year's Melodies," and on New Year's Eve the Copenhagen Countdown celebrates midnight in Denmark at 3pm our time, with a live '80s tribute band in Solvang Park [1].

Dinner after the lights

The 5 and 6pm shows leave plenty of evening, and all five of these are within a 7-minute walk of Solvang Park. On tree-lighting Friday and parade Saturday, book where you can or eat early.

Parking, trolley and bus

Parking is free everywhere in Solvang [3]. The lot at 1639 Copenhagen Drive, next to the Solvang Visitor Center, is a 2-minute walk from Solvang Park; the lots at 464 Alisal Road and 1616 Oak Street are about 5 minutes. City code lets public works close all or part of a lot for a parade [19], so on parade morning come early or park at the edge of the village and walk in. The City lists the parade at First Street and Copenhagen Drive [2]. Lot-by-lot rules are in our Solvang parking guide.

By bus: parade day is a Saturday, so Santa Ynez Valley Transit is running. Its Express bus comes every 30 minutes along Highway 246 between Buellton, Solvang and Santa Ynez, from 6:30am to 7pm Monday to Saturday. A ride is $1.50, or $4 for a Saturday all-day pass. There are no fixed routes on Sundays (Dial-A-Ride only), and no service at all on Thanksgiving, Christmas or New Year's Day [16][17]. The last buses leave around 7pm, so plan a ride home after the 8 or 9pm show. Amtrak Thruway coaches stop at 1630 Mission Drive, which is Solvang Park itself [4].

By trolley: Solvang Trolley & Carriage Company, whose horse-drawn streetcar copies a 1915 Danish "Honen" (little hen) trolley, runs a Christmas light tour through the Santa Ynez Valley with hot chocolate on board [15]. Solvang USA lists 2026 tickets as coming soon, so there are no dates or prices to plan around yet [1]. Flying in? See getting to Solvang.

Will it snow?

Don't pack for snow. Solvang USA describes winter lows in the 40s °F, and annual rainfall that seldom tops 12 inches [5]. Evenings are jacket weather, and the Maker's Market, Santa's Village photos and Copenhagen Countdown all go ahead rain or shine [1].

Where to stay and eat

Book your room early. Solvang USA's own advice is to reserve Julefest hotels as far ahead as possible and check cancellation policies [1]. Our guide to Solvang hotels covers 15 places, most of them in the village itself. If Solvang is full, try Buellton or Santa Ynez, both a short drive away. Two current offers: The Landsby lists 10% off travel through January 31, 2027 (blackout dates apply) [6], and Alisal Ranch lists 25% off select Sunday to Thursday stays this fall and winter [7].

For everything else on the valley calendar this winter, see our Santa Ynez Valley events calendar.

For holiday meals, Mad & Vin at The Landsby is open Christmas Eve and Christmas Day with a limited menu plus Christmas specials (Christmas Day brunch 7:30am to 2pm, dinner 5 to 9pm) [8]. For the rest of the trip, see where to eat in Solvang. If you want something to take home, The Solvang Bakery sells custom gingerbread houses and kits [9], and Olsen's Danish Village Bakery makes kringle and kransekage [10].
