Solvang Festival Theater: Theaterfest, PCPA and the season

Solvang Festival Theater, 420 Second Street, is an outdoor theater owned and run by Solvang Theaterfest, a nonprofit. Theaterfest is not PCPA. PCPA is a professional conservatory theater company on the Allan Hancock College campus in Santa Maria, and the Solvang theater is "home to some of PCPA's summer productions" [4]. Theaterfest also books its own concerts and a Summer Music in the Garden series on its Terrace Stage.

PCPA in Solvang, summer 2026: Come From Away (June 11–27), Disney's Frozen (July 5–Aug 2) and Beehive (Aug 7–23), per PCPA's Season 62 page [5]. PCPA's fall and winter shows play in Santa Maria, such as The Wizard of Oz at the Marian Theatre, Nov 5–Dec 20, 2026. Check pcpa.org for the 2027 Solvang lineup.

Coming up at the theater: Elf the Musical, a student-led show by Green Like Grass Productions, Dec 11 to 12, 2026, at 6pm [4].

After dark: the Festival Theater is a stop on The Haunt's ghost hunt, $55 nightly at 7pm or 8pm with an EMF meter for every guest. Times, prices and the daytime food tours are in our Solvang ghost tours and food tours guide.

Know before you go: Theaterfest's FAQ says shows are outdoors, rain or shine, and nights are "generally chilly," so bring a blanket. Umbrellas aren't allowed (ponchos are sold). Snacks and drinks are sold; no glass or outside drinks, but you can bring your own snacks. Children under 5 aren't admitted unless a show says otherwise. Wheelchair seating is in Row M. Parking is free on the surrounding streets and in the public lots off Mission Drive and Oak Street. Tickets are non-refundable. Box offices: Theaterfest (805) 686-1789; PCPA 805-922-8313, opening at 6pm on performance days.

Wednesday farmers market

Wednesdays, 2:30pm to 6pm, on the 400 block of First Street downtown, per the Santa Barbara Certified Farmers Market Association, which runs it [6]. That's the same block as Wheel Fun Rentals. The association says all its markets take CalFresh EBT, WIC and credit cards (exchanged for tokens). Buellton has its own market on Mondays, 3–7pm, from March to October; for every market Monday to Sunday, see Santa Ynez Valley farmers markets, day by day.

Where should you shop in Solvang?

  • Books and Andersen: The Book Loft, 1680 Mission Drive, has the Hans Christian Andersen Museum upstairs, open daily 10am to 5pm.
  • Spices to take home: Solvang Spice Merchant, 1603 Copenhagen Drive, Suite 2, sells spices, salts, sugars and teas, in the shop and online [7]. It doesn't post shop hours on its site.
  • Antiques: if an old list sends you to Solvang Antiques, its site says that after more than 40 years in a Solvang showroom, the store "is now selling exclusively online" [8].
  • Pastry boxes: kringle and aebleskiver to go are in our Solvang bakeries guide.
  • Antiques, vintage and gifts: eleven shops, from Danish costumes to antique clocks, in our Solvang shopping guide.

Parking is free in the village's three public lots; see where to park in Solvang.

Where can you rent bikes or e-bikes in Solvang?

Wheel Fun Rentals, 475 First Street, rents surrey cycles, bikes and e-bikes (it takes e-bike reservations), plus mobility scooters [9]. Hours: Monday, Wednesday and Thursday 10am to 5pm, Friday 10am to 6pm, Saturday and Sunday 10am to 7pm; closed Tuesday. The last rental goes out an hour before close, and all hours are weather permitting. Its self-guided tour map heads out past the ostriches and llamas toward the wineries. Hybrid bikes are $45 for a half day and $55 for a full day, and e-bikes are $60 and $65 [12].

Where to ride: the City of Solvang's Mobility Element describes bike lanes on Alamo Pintado Road toward Los Olivos and a separated Class I bike path along Highway 246 from Alamo Pintado Creek to Refugio Road [10]. Tasting along the way? The rooms you can walk to are in our Solvang wine tasting guide.

Santa Ynez Valley Botanic Garden: free, and 8 minutes away

The Santa Ynez Valley Botanic Garden is in Buellton, not Solvang: in RiverView Park at 151 Sycamore Drive, 4.4 miles (8 min) from Solvang. It's open sunrise to sundown, 365 days a year, admission is free (donations encouraged) and leashed dogs are welcome [11]. The garden focuses on plants native to the Santa Ynez River watershed, and it also runs a Holiday Lights Festival. Phone (805) 245-5603.

Is Solvang worth visiting?

For a weekend from Los Angeles or Santa Barbara, yes, if you want a walkable town with food, wine and some history. The 1804 mission, the Andersen museum, the Elverhøj Museum, the bakeries and the theater are all downtown, and parking is free. Solvang is about 33 miles (50 min) from downtown Santa Barbara and about 128 miles from downtown LA (getting to Solvang).

Two planning tips from the hours on this page. Come on a Saturday, the one day every museum here is open. And if you want the ocean too, Lompoc's beaches are about 50 minutes west: see Lompoc beaches, then stay for dinner in Lompoc or drive back for Solvang restaurants.

Our in-depth Solvang guides

What else can you do in the Santa Ynez Valley?

Next door, see things to do in Buellton (6 minutes west) and things to do in Santa Ynez (7 minutes east), and check the valley weather by month before you pack. Ride a horse-drawn streetcar: the Solvang Trolley & Carriage Co. runs narrated tours of the village in a 1915 replica Danish "Honen" trolley pulled by Belgian draft horses [1]. Ride a real horse: Vino Vaqueros offers private 70-minute guided rides through the ranch and vineyard trails of Demetria Estate on the Foxen Canyon Wine Trail [2]. Every other ride, from pony rides to the beach, is in our horseback riding guide. Eat your way around: start with aebleskiver and Danish pastry, then Solvang restaurants for dinner and Solvang nightlife after. In winter, Julefest runs from late November to early January. In town for a wedding? See the wedding guest guide.

Going deeper on one stop? We have know-before-you-go guides for Mission Santa Inés, OstrichLand, Lake Cachuma, Highline Adventures ziplines, Figueroa Mountain, the Gaviota Wind Caves and dining at the Alisal.

Was Solvang on TV or in the movies?

Yes. Sideways (2004) shot its breakfast scene at Solvang Restaurant and its golf scene at the River Course at the Alisal, and the rest of the film is a short drive away: follow our Sideways filming locations tour. On reality TV, Vanderpump Rules came to town in season 7 ("So Vain in Solvang," aired February 11, 2019). Visit Solvang says the cast stayed at The Landsby and visited CrossHatch Winery and The Copenhagen House. CrossHatch has since left Solvang and now pours in Santa Barbara.

Which Solvang attractions have changed names?

Three names trip up older guidebooks. The Wildling Museum is now the California Nature Art Museum. Flag Is Up Farms, at 901 E Highway 246, now goes by the California Horse Center. It is a boarding and training facility rooted in Monty Roberts' methods, not a visitor attraction [3]. And Casa Dumetz, the Los Alamos tasting room, is now Clementine Carter Wines.

Only here for the day? Our Solvang day trip runs it hour by hour, and Solvang parking covers the free lots.

Good to know

What is Solvang known for?

Being Danish. Danish-American educators founded Solvang, Danish for "sunny field," in 1911, and the village still plays the part with four wooden windmills, a Round Tower replica and bakeries selling kringle and aebleskiver. Mission Santa Inés (1804) sits at the east end of Mission Drive, and most downtown tasting rooms take walk-ins. Do the windmill walk, then grab a pastry from the bakeries.

Is Solvang Danish or Dutch?

Danish. The windmills fool people, but Solvang was founded in 1911 by Danish-American educators who planned a Danish folk school there. The giveaways are all Danish: aebleskiver, kringle, a Little Mermaid on the fountain at Mission Drive and Alisal Road, and a September festival called Danish Days. Time a trip for Danish Days, or start at the bakeries.

What to do in Solvang for a day?

Split the day: morning bakeries, windmills and Mission Santa Inés on foot, then 14 minutes to Los Olivos for walk-in tasting rooms after lunch. That is the plan we use on our Solvang day trip. If you want more options in the village only, start with things to do in Solvang.
