Bob's Well Bread's kitchen stops at 3pm, Norman serves brunch until 3pm on weekends, and Plenty on Bell's only dinner is Friday. R&B Meats, the deli counter inside Los Alamos Market, posts no hours of its own, so call before a late lunch. Holiday weeks and winter can shift small-town hours; Charlie's says so outright.
Bell Street on foot
Park once. From Charlie's at 185 Bell Street, the west end, to Bob's Well Bread at 550 Bell is about a third of a mile, a 7-minute walk, and nearly every table in town sits in between. West to east:
- Charlie's (185 Bell): the diner open since 1978, every day.
- Full of Life Flatbread (225 Bell): wood-fired flatbreads from a menu that changes weekly.
- Bodega (273 Bell): natural wine in a backyard garden under live oaks, with Priedite Barbecue serving from the bungalow.
- The 1880 Union Hotel (362 Bell), the street's Old West landmark; see Los Alamos hotels.
- R&B Meats (405 Bell, inside Los Alamos Market) and, across the street, Bell's (406 Bell), the Michelin-starred bistro.
- Pico (458 Bell), in the 1880 general store, with tables out in its edible garden.
- Plenty on Bell (508 Bell), on the 140-year-old site of the Junction Saloon.
- The Depot Bar (515 Bell), in the old Pacific Coast Railway depot, then Bob's Well Bread (550 Bell) at the east end.
Norman is the one outlier: it's up the hill at Skyview Los Alamos, 9150 US-101, about an 18-minute walk from Bell's or 2 minutes by car. Diners park in the lot at the bottom of the hill and call (805) 344-0104 for a lift up. Tasting rooms fill the gaps along the same blocks: see Los Alamos wine tasting.
What are the best restaurants in Los Alamos, CA?
Everything here except Norman is on Bell Street, the town's main street, so you can walk between them (the walk, block by block).

Do I need reservations at Bell's?
For dinner, yes. Bell's serves a reservation-only prix fixe: $125 per person before drinks, service and tax, or a shorter $75 menu on Thursdays. Dinner runs 5pm to 8:30pm, Thursday to Monday. Reservations open on the 1st of each month at 1pm, for the following two months. Lunch (11am to 3pm) takes reservations, and some tables are kept for walk-ins. On Monday evenings, wines over $60 are half price [1]. See our Bell's listing.
Which Los Alamos restaurants are open Mon–Wed?
The short answer is Norman, with Bell's added on Monday and Plenty on Bell on Tuesday and Wednesday; the open-today grid has every hour.
Early in the week, Norman is the sure bet. On Monday you also have Bell's, and on Tuesday and Wednesday Plenty on Bell for breakfast and lunch. Pico serves dinner from 5pm on Tuesday and from 3pm Wednesday to Sunday. Two everyday standbys fill the gaps: Charlie's, the diner at 185 Bell Street open since 1978 (and, on Fridays, Fish and Chip Fridays), and the R&B Meats deli counter inside Los Alamos Market, where the smoked Santa Maria-style tri-tip sandwich is the order.
Want a bottle for later? Owner note (Tony Michael, Oct 17, 2026): Los Alamos Market and Collins Market & Deli, the town's two markets, both have good wine by the bottle for grab and go, and Pico has a bottle selection to go from its retail wine shop. Addresses and details are in where to grab a bottle to go in Los Alamos.
Where to get breakfast in Los Alamos?
Bob's Well Bread opens at 7am, Thursday to Monday (closed Tuesday and Wednesday), Charlie's opens daily at 8am (7am on Sundays), and Plenty on Bell serves breakfast and lunch from 8am, Tuesday to Sunday. At weekends, Norman serves brunch from 10am to 3pm.
Can you take a hot air balloon ride near Los Alamos?
Yes. Balloons launch from the Alisos Canyon Road area near Los Alamos (our founder, firsthand, Oct 2026). The one operator we found flying the valley, Sky's The Limit Ballooning Adventures, doesn't publish its launch fields. Guests meet at Los Olivos Grocery in Santa Ynez, ride its vans to "one of our launch sites", and the crew picks the field that morning after testing the winds with a small balloon [6]. Meet at 2621 Highway 154 and park on the west side of the building.
- Price: the morning champagne flight is $265 per person, with 10% off for four or more, on its flight page. Private flights are "call for pricing", and it also lists an evening flight.
- Timing: meet between 6am and 7am depending on sunrise; 45 minutes to an hour in the air; allow 3.5 to 4 hours in all, including the post-flight champagne.
- Rules: ages 5 and up, no pregnant passengers, 240 lb per person, up to 16 passengers per flight.
- Season: all year, weather permitting. Eyeing Christmas Eve, Christmas Day or New Year's Eve? Call first: its flight page lists those days as closed, but its FAQ says it flies them.
- Booking: book online (paid in full when you reserve) or call 1-760-802-3226.
Then breakfast in Los Alamos. With a 6am meet and 4 hours door to door, you're back at your car by mid-morning, and Bell Street is 12.6 miles (18 min) from Los Olivos Grocery. Bob's Well Bread is open Thursday to Monday, 7am to 4pm, with the kitchen closing at 3pm, so book a Thursday-to-Monday flight to make it. Flying on a Tuesday or Wednesday? Bob's is closed, but Plenty on Bell serves breakfast from 8am, Tuesday to Sunday, and Charlie's is open daily.
Where can I get a burger in Los Alamos?
Two to know, both on Bell Street. At Pico, the Pico Burger comes with bacon, balsamic onion, cheddar and house-cut fries for $28. The menu changes with what nearby farms have, so it isn't guaranteed every night [5]. Out back at Bodega, the Priedite Barbecue pop-up serves Bandito Burgers and BBQ tacos on Thursday, Friday and Sunday and its BBQ Round Up on Saturday. Everything runs 11am to 4pm or until it sells out. Heading for the coast? The famous Jalama Burger is at Jalama Beach, and Lompoc's options are in Lompoc restaurants.
Is Los Alamos worth a detour for dinner?
Yes. Bell Street is 17 minutes north of Buellton and 23 from Solvang (drive times), and its restaurants are worth the drive, provided you go Thursday to Sunday and book Bell's early. Make a night of it with a stay in Los Alamos. For wine on Bell Street, there's Bodega's garden, or see our county tasting guide. Bell's holds the valley's only Michelin star; see every Michelin restaurant in the valley.
After dinner, the Depot Bar at 515 Bell Street is in an 1882 Pacific Coast Railway depot, and its own site calls it the last place in town still pouring. The Infatuation calls it a dive with pool tables, shuffleboard and live music. It's open Wednesday to Monday, until 1am on Friday and Saturday, and closed Tuesday. More in bars in the valley.
Between meals, taste on the same street: our Los Alamos wine tasting guide has the six Bell Street tasting rooms and the days each one opens. In town for a wedding? See the wedding guest guide.

Eating in Los Alamos before a Vandenberg launch?
More than half of recent Vandenberg launches went up after 5pm, and Los Alamos is on the way to Lompoc if you're coming down Highway 101 or tasting on Bell Street first: Lompoc City Hall is 37 minutes from The Depot by road. Our founder's picks are Charlie's for a quick bite, Pico's garden and cocktails if you're done with wine, and The Depot Bar for bar snacks, pool and the game on TV. Hours, drive times to each viewing spot and the launch list are on our Vandenberg launch guide.
Where can I charge an EV while I eat in Los Alamos?
Right on Bell Street. Electrify America has 4 CCS fast chargers at the Depot Mall, 515 Bell Street, the same address as the Depot Bar, and a Tesla Supercharger with 8 stalls sits in the lot at 645 Bell Street by the Cotiere tasting room. Both are listed as open 24 hours in the U.S. Department of Energy station locator. Plug in and walk to dinner. More on our EV charging page.
Getting to Los Alamos
This is Los Alamos, California: ZIP 93440, in northern Santa Barbara County, right on Highway 101 in the Los Alamos Valley, just north of the Santa Ynez Valley. It has nothing to do with Los Alamos, New Mexico, so if a search sends you to a New Mexico visitor site, you're in the wrong state. Drive times to Bell Street, without traffic:
| From | To Bell Street |
|---|---|
| Los Olivos (Grand Avenue) | 11.7 mi, 16 min |
| Buellton (Avenue of Flags) | 14.5 mi, 17 min |
| Solvang (Copenhagen Drive) | 17.4 mi, 23 min |
| Santa Maria (downtown) | 18.6 mi, 24 min |
Spending the night? Los Alamos hotels compares check-in times, dog rules and walks to dinner for all four places to stay, and the Los Alamos town guide has the rest of Bell Street.
