What is the Wine Country Half course like?
The organizer's route starts at Atterdag Road and Laurel Avenue, passes Hans Christian Andersen Park, runs through Los Olivos, up and down Corkscrew Hill and down Ballard Canyon, past more than seven vineyards, to the finish on Copenhagen Drive. Aid stations are at miles 3, 5.8, 6.9, 8.3, 9.9 and 11.7. Relay leg one (5.8 miles) is mostly uphill to the handoff at 2890 Grand Ave in Los Olivos; leg two (7.3 miles) is mostly downhill.
How much does it cost, and what is included?
The organizer's site currently lists the half at $175, the relay at $239 and the 5K at $70, with higher later releases. Half entries include a race shirt, medal and tote. The finish-line wine festival is an optional add-on for runners and guests 21 and over, bought during registration while passes last.
How do you make a weekend of it?
The finish is in the middle of Solvang, so stay where you can walk to the start: see Solvang hotels. Brunch afterward is easy with breakfast in Solvang, and the course runs past many of the wineries in our Los Olivos tasting guide, if you want to go back and taste them on Sunday.
