Paula's menu: what to order

The Danish pancakes are why the place exists: the founders built the menu around them in 1986. The menu calls them "two large, thin pancakes," closer to a crepe than an American stack. Prices from its current menu:

  • Paula's Special ($15.95): Danish pancakes topped with apples, blueberries or strawberries and whipped cream. The one to photograph.
  • Filled with Danish sausage or ham ($14.95): the savory order, and the best way to try the house sausage.
  • Danish pancakes with fruit ($14.95), or plain ($13.95) if you want to taste the batter.
  • Danish pancake combination ($15.95): pancakes with eggs, for the table that can't decide.
  • Danish sausage and eggs ($16.95): the medisterpølse on its own.
  • Buttermilk pancakes: a large stack is $14.75 if someone wants the American kind.

Breakfast runs all day, and lunch starts at 11am (noon on Sundays). Prices change; the official menu has today's.

The house Danish sausage

Paula's makes its own Solvang Danish-style sausage, medisterpølse, from what the menu calls "our original recipe for over 30 years," and sells it fully cooked to take home: a 4-pack is $13.99 and an 8-pack $22.99. To taste it before you buy, order the Danish pancakes filled with sausage.

How long is the wait?

There's no booking, so the wait depends on when you show up. It opens at 7am every day; arrive near opening on a Saturday or Sunday, or come after the breakfast rush. Waiting anyway? The Old Mission Santa Inés is a few minutes' walk east along Mission Drive (our guide).

Who started Paula's?

Charles and Paula Greenwald moved to the Santa Ynez Valley in 1971 and opened The Belgian Café in Solvang that May; it still serves Belgian waffles and crepes on Copenhagen Drive. Fifteen years later, in 1986, they opened Paula's Pancake House, built around Danish pancakes and American breakfast. It's still family owned, and the restaurant says many of its first young customers now bring their own children.
