    1880 Union Hotel

Built in 1880 as a stagecoach stop and lodging house, this Bell Street landmark was rebuilt after an 1893 fire and restored in 1972 with the wooden false front you see today. It reopened to overnight guests in 2026 after about a decade of private buyouts only. Its site says it now rents rooms one at a time, with overnight guests getting the parlor, the grounds and a seat in the saloon, but weddings fill most weekends and the booking engine showed no open dates when we checked.

Where should you stay for a Los Alamos wedding weekend?

For a wedding at the 1880 Union Hotel, the couple usually takes the hotel's nine rooms, so guests fill the rest of Bell Street. The Victorian Mansion is next door, and the Alamo Motel (some people call it the Alamo Hotel) is a three-minute walk, which matters with a 2am curfew at the Union [5]. The Alamo also hosts weddings of its own; it says to just ask [8]. Skyview is the biggest block of rooms in town, about 20 minutes on foot or a short ride, and it lends bikes. With so few rooms in Los Alamos, bigger guest lists spill over to Los Olivos or Buellton, about 12 to 14 miles by road. For venues elsewhere in the valley, see our wedding guest guide.

Can you book one room? The hotel's site says yes, and its Lodgify booking engine lists seven rooms separately, from $325 to $650 a night. Its online calendar did not return a dated price for the November and December 2026 dates tried in October, so call 805-617-1669 for one before planning around it.

The Union reopened to overnight guests in spring 2026 after about a decade, under new operator Voyj Travel, and all nine rooms were refurbished. The Santa Barbara Independent reports you can book the room Paul McCartney uses in the "Say Say Say" video, now with a clawfoot tub [6].

How far is each hotel from the 1880 Union Hotel on foot?

Everything on Bell Street is close. From the Union at 362 Bell Street, it's about 160 feet to the Victorian Mansion, 0.1 mile to the Alamo Motel, 0.1 mile to Pico and 0.3 mile to Côtière, the farthest tasting room east. Skyview, on the hill off Highway 101, is 0.9 mile, about 20 minutes, or 0.8 mile by car [7]. For the tasting rooms in between, see Los Alamos wine tasting.

Before you book, see which Los Alamos restaurants are open each day: most of Bell Street keeps a Thursday-to-Monday week.

Is the Skyview Los Alamos worth it?

It is if you want a hotel where you don't need to leave the property. Skyview has 33 rooms, a heated pool for 21 and over, and Norman, a poolside restaurant and bar open daily. Skyview's own guide says Norman "is the only restaurant in Los Alamos that is open for daily service," which matters in a town where most kitchens close a few days a week [1]. It also lends free bikes and welcomes dogs for a fee. The trade-off is that it sits on the hilltop off Highway 101, so it's a short ride, not a stroll, to Bell Street. The walk from Skyview to Bell's is about 18 minutes (0.9 mi) and to Bob's Well Bread about 15 minutes (0.7 mi); by bike it's about 7 and 6 minutes [7]. That makes Skyview's free Linus bikes the easy way to dinner, and a car the easy way back up the hill late at night. If walking to dinner is the point, look at the Alamo Motel.

For rooms, pool passes and Norman's new chef, see our Skyview Los Alamos guide. Want something smaller nearer Los Olivos? Try the Ballard Inn.

Does Skyview Los Alamos have EV charging?

Yes, for guests. Skyview says it has "2 regular (not Superchargers) Tesla charging stations" in its upper lot, that they are reserved for hotel guests, first come, first served, and that it has no adapter, so bring yours. In town, Los Alamos has two public fast-charging sites on Bell Street: an 8-stall Tesla Supercharger at 645 Bell and 4 Electrify America CCS chargers at the Depot Mall, 515 Bell. Details on our EV charging page.

Is Los Alamos a good base for Santa Ynez Valley wine tasting?

It's a good base, with a little driving. From Bell Street, Buellton is 17 minutes and Los Olivos 16 by car, without traffic [7], close to Sta. Rita Hills wineries and the Foxen Canyon estates. The Vintners call Alisos Canyon "our newest AVA," at the doorstep of Los Alamos [3]. You can taste in town too. A Tribute to Grace pours Grenache on Bell Street and asks for reservations, and Clementine Carter (formerly Casa Dumetz, renamed in April 2024) is open every day but Tuesday. Our Los Alamos wine tasting guide has hours for all of them. For the wider county, see Santa Barbara County wine tasting.

What is there to do in Los Alamos at night?

Have dinner, then a drink. Bell's serves lunch and dinner Thursday to Monday, and reservations are strongly recommended. Pico, in the historic General Store, serves dinner Tuesday to Sunday. Bodega has a backyard wine and beer garden, and Norman at Skyview is open every day, with a new chef, Tyler Cole, since July 2026 [1] [9]. The 1880 Union Hotel's saloon is open to the public Wednesday and Thursday, 4pm to 9pm [5].

In the morning, there's Bob's Well Bread, a Sunset Travel Awards winner (Thursday to Monday, 7am to 4pm, closed Tuesday and Wednesday, per its own site [10]).

For something plainer, Charlie's, the Bell Street diner open since 1978, is open every day and does Fish and Chip Fridays, and the R&B Meats deli inside Los Alamos Market makes a smoked tri-tip sandwich worth the stop [11].

Planning the evening? Most of Bell Street opens Thursday to Monday, so check which Los Alamos restaurants are open tonight, day by day, before you book the room. At the Alamo Motel, evenings revolve around the communal fire pit and Bar Alamo, open until 9pm [4]. Opening days change, so check before you go.

How far is Los Alamos from Solvang?

23 minutes by car, 17.6 miles from the 1880 Union Hotel to Solvang Park by way of Highway 101 and Buellton, without traffic. This is Los Alamos, California, ZIP 93440, in northern Santa Barbara County; it has nothing to do with Los Alamos, New Mexico. One address quirk: Skyview's is 9150 US-101, but the hotel sits on the hill above the east end of Bell Street, a 15- to 18-minute walk from dinner. From Los Angeles, the Alamo Motel puts the trip at about two and a half hours [4].
