I live in Los Alamos, and here's why it's worth the drive: one Old West main street, six tasting rooms within a quarter mile, Bell's and Pico for dinner, and fewer crowds than Los Olivos. Go Friday to Sunday, when every room pours. On a weekday, Bedford and Clementine Carter are open, though Clementine Carter closes Tuesday.

The Alisos Canyon AVA
The Alisos Canyon AVA is a 5,774-acre wine region just east of Los Alamos, made official in September 2020. It's small: at approval it held nine commercial vineyards (about 238 acres) and one winery [3]. The draw is cool air and sandy, low-clay Careaga Sandstone, which suits Rhône grapes.
Dovecote, on Alisos Canyon Road, calls itself the heart of the AVA. Zaca Mesa and TREAD sit just east of the line on Foxen Canyon Road, and Shokrian is west of town.
Which day to go
Go Friday, Saturday or Sunday. That's when all six Los Alamos tasting rooms are open.
- Thursday: Clementine Carter (until 7pm), Bedford, Côtière and Bodega.
- Monday: Bedford, plus Clementine Carter until 4pm.
- Tuesday: the quiet one. Bedford is the only tasting room open, and Bar Alamo opens at 3pm.
Restaurants keep short weeks too, so line up dinner with our Los Alamos restaurants guide.
The walking crawl
Park once and do the Los Alamos tasting crawl on foot. Clementine Carter to Côtière is only about a quarter mile [1].
- Lunch: Bodega (273 Bell), with Priedite Barbecue out back.
- Walk east: Clementine Carter at 388, then Bedford and Lo-Fi, both at 448.
- The Mercantile Building (490): A Tribute to Grace and Amada.
- The far end: Côtière at 645.
- Night: dinner at Bell's or Pico, or a last glass at Bar Alamo until 9pm.
Staying over? Here's where to stay in Los Alamos.
Bottles to go
Want a bottle for the room or a picnic? Three Bell Street spots sell wine to go. Insider tip from our founder, Tony Michael: both of the town's markets have good wine for grab and go, and so does Pico.
- Pico at the Los Alamos General Store, 458 Bell Street, (805) 344-1122. The 1880 general store has a retail wine shop: Pico says it has "over 800 wines on our list and the walls of our retail shop", heavy on small-production bottles alongside area producers [4]. Open Tuesday 5pm to 9pm and Wednesday to Sunday 3pm to 9pm.
- Los Alamos Market, 405 Bell Street, (805) 344-2291. A grocery with produce, liquor and the R&B Meats deli counter inside, so you can pick up a tri-tip sandwich with the bottle. Its state license covers beer, wine and spirits to take away [5] [6].
- Collins Market & Deli, 290 Bell Street, (805) 344-6755. The market with the gas pumps at the west end of Bell Street, with a deli that serves hot food every day from opening. Its state license covers beer and wine to take away [5] [7].
Neither market posts its hours online, so call before a late run.
Old names, new names
A few Los Alamos wineries have changed names or moved. Casa Dumetz became Clementine Carter Wines in April 2024, at the same 388 Bell Street address [2]. Martian Ranch's tasting room has closed. Scar of the Sea pours in San Luis Obispo, not Los Alamos, though its winemakers make Skyview's estate rosé. Frequency Wines is in Santa Barbara, and Municipal Winemakers has no Los Alamos room. For estates outside town, see the Foxen Canyon Wine Trail, which runs north toward Los Alamos.
Drum Canyon back road
You can drive from Los Alamos straight to the Sta. Rita Hills wineries, and the back way is the fun one. Drum Canyon Road starts as Centennial Street in town and crosses the Purisima Hills to Highway 246. Bell Street to Dierberg's tasting room is 7.9 mi (19 min) and to Spear 10.2 mi (25 min), without traffic. Drum Canyon Road is narrow and twisty, one lane each way, so take it slow.
Have breakfast on Bell Street, then taste at Dierberg, Spear or Pence (book Spear and Pence ahead). Our Drum Canyon wine route has the day plan both ways, and Sta. Rita Hills wineries covers the rest of the AVA.

Los Alamos wine FAQ
How many wineries and tasting rooms are in Los Alamos, CA?
Six on Bell Street: Clementine Carter, Bedford Winery, Lo-Fi Wines, A Tribute to Grace, Amada Cellars and Côtière. Bodega pours natural wine in its garden, Bar Alamo is open until 9pm, and Pico pours Lumen wines. A Tribute to Grace calls itself the town's fifth tasting room; Amada opened in 2025.
Is Casa Dumetz still open?
Casa Dumetz is now Clementine Carter Wines. It rebranded in April 2024 and is still at 388 Bell Street, (805) 344-1900, sharing a patio with Babi's Beer Emporium. A six-wine flight is $40, waived when you buy three bottles. It is closed on Tuesdays.
Does Municipal Winemakers have a tasting room in Los Alamos?
No. Municipal Winemakers does not list a Los Alamos tasting room. Its name comes up because the Alamo Motel's wine bar was once hosted by Municipal Wines. Today that space is Bar Alamo, a beer and wine bar at 425 Bell Street.
What wineries are in the Alisos Canyon AVA?
Dovecote Estate Winery, on Alisos Canyon Road, calls itself the heart of the AVA. When TTB approved the 5,774-acre AVA in 2020 it counted one winery and nine vineyards inside. Zaca Mesa, TREAD and Shokrian are nearby but outside the boundary.
How much is a tasting at Dovecote?
A flight at The Shack on Mission Pond is $45 or $75 per adult, waived with a three-bottle purchase. Bottle Service by the lake requires one bottle per two adults. Book on Tock or call 805-350-9699.
What is Los Alamos, CA known for?
Bell Street. This Old West main street has tasting rooms within a short walk, the 1880 Union Hotel, and Bell's, which holds one Michelin Star. It's the Los Alamos in Santa Barbara County, not the New Mexico one, with fewer crowds than Los Olivos. Book dinner first, then walk the crawl.
Where is Los Alamos, California?
In northern Santa Barbara County, right off US-101 between Buellton and Santa Maria: about 14 miles, 17 minutes without traffic, north of Buellton, and 17 miles, 22 minutes, from downtown Solvang. Take the back road over the hills on Drum Canyon, or see where to stay in Los Alamos.
