Why make the drive

It turned 100 in 2026. Anna Dorinda Blaksley Bliss founded it in 1926 on 13 acres as a memorial to her father, Henry Blaksley, and landscape architects Beatrix Farrand and Lockwood de Forest Jr. shaped its design from 1938. Today it covers 78 acres of Mission Canyon with nothing but California natives, about 6 miles of trails and a redwood grove.

The centennial exhibit, Still Growing: 100 Years of California's Native Plants, runs through March 21, 2027.

Go if: you want a long morning walk with a dog, ideas for a drought-tolerant garden at home, or a reason to stop on the way to Santa Barbara.

Tickets, reservations and parking

Everyone except members needs a timed reservation, online or by phone at (805) 682-4726, and it covers parking for one car. Members can walk in, though the garden recommends they book too, and if spots remain, walk-ups can pay cash at the kiosk. The lot is tight, so vehicles over 31 feet aren't allowed. Adults are $23 most of the year and $25 in peak season, March 1 to May 31. Seniors 60 and over, military and students 13 and up pay $18 ($21 in peak season), kids 3 to 12 pay $14 ($17), and under 3 is free. Families using EBT or WIC pay $3 each through Museums for All. The garden says to book ahead, especially from April to July.

Plan your visit

  • Dogs: welcome and free, on a leash at all times and on paths.
  • Food: picnic only in the designated picnic areas.
  • Access: not every trail is fully accessible; the garden's accessibility page lists the routes.
  • Members' hour: 9 to 10am for members only.
