Book first: every winery on this page pours by appointment only. Crown Point ($75–250) and Grimm's Bluff ($150–225) run private estate tastings, Grassini hosts at its estate Thursday to Monday and runs a daily tasting room in downtown Santa Barbara, and Star Lane's wine caves go by waiting list. Crown Point takes day-of requests by phone.

Grassini Family Vineyards: estate or Santa Barbara?
Pick the Santa Barbara room for an easy flight and the estate for the vineyard. Grassini's downtown tasting room at 24 El Paseo, steps from State Street in the Presidio neighborhood, is open daily with seatings from noon to 5pm. Tastings start at $30 for an Estate Flight of five Bordeaux varietals, and online reservations take groups of up to six. That room is in Santa Barbara, not in Happy Canyon.
At the Santa Ynez estate (5775 Genuine Risk Rd), the site's listed hours are Thursday to Monday, 11am–3pm, and reservations are required. Options include a 90-minute seated tasting by the pond (price on request), a two-hour Private Winery Tour & Tasting through the production facility and barrel caves (from $125), and the 2.5-hour Pinnacle tour with a vineyard drive, the caves and six limited wines with charcuterie (from $175). During harvest, Sunday and Monday tours with winemaker Bradley Long start at $125. Book on grassinifamilyvineyards.com.
Staying over: Grassini also owns La Tarantella, a private five-bedroom villa on the estate, just across the creek bed from the winery. Each bedroom has a king bed and its own bathroom, and Grassini rents the whole house for short stays as well as events. No nightly rate or minimum stay is published; ask through latarantella.com. Details in staying in the vines below.
Crown Point Vineyards: tastings and prices
The most flexible of the estates, because it takes day-of requests by phone when it has room (805-693-9300). Every visit is private and paid in full when you book, Monday to Saturday from 10am, with the last tasting at 4pm; Sundays are subject to availability. Prices per guest:
- Estate Prelude, $75: 60 minutes, a barrel and fermentation room tour, then three wines with estate olive oil and Bob's Well Bread sourdough.
- Vineyard + Table, $100: 90 minutes, adding a vineyard tour by utility vehicle and three Cowgirl Creamery cheeses.
- Founder's Reserve, $175: 90 minutes with a barrel tasting and the Reserve Cabernet. Crown Point says it's the most popular.
- Champagne & Caviar, $250: 90 minutes with Champagne and caviar service.
Fees aren't waived with a purchase, cancellations need 48 hours, and outside food isn't allowed. Kids can come on the tour (tasting is 21+), and leashed dogs are welcome if you tell them in advance. Address: 1733 Fletcher Way, Santa Ynez. Book on crownpointvineyards.com.
Grimm's Bluff: private organic vineyard tours
Book this one for the farming story. Grimm's Bluff is a family estate on Kentucky Road with 16 acres of certified organic (CCOF) Bordeaux varietals, planted from 2012. Visits are private, by appointment, for up to 10 guests:
- $150 per guest, 75 minutes: a vineyard tour ending at the cabana with estate wines, cheese, and an olive oil and honey tasting.
- $225 per guest, 1.5 to 2 hours: the full property, a glass of Rosé at the cabana, time with the farm animals, then reserve wines with a full cheese plate.
Groups of six or more should get in touch before booking, and there's a 72-hour cancellation policy. The site promises views over Happy Canyon and Lake Cachuma. Don't count on a walk-in room: the Santa Barbara County Vintners listing still shows a Los Olivos tasting room address, but Grimm's Bluff's own site mentions only estate tours. Book on grimmsbluff.com or call (805) 691-9065.
Star Lane Vineyard: can you visit the wine caves?
Yes, if you can get on the list. Star Lane, which the Dierberg family planted to 200 acres of Cabernet and other Bordeaux varieties in 1998, built a gravity-flow winery with subterranean wine caves. Its own site calls them the only ones in Santa Barbara County, but they aren't: Grassini, Presqu'ile and Sunstone all have caves too (see wineries with caves). Visits are limited and by appointment, and the site says they're granted by waiting-list seniority. The Star Lane Experience starts on the terrace with a glass, goes through the winery and barrel caves, and ends with a tasting of the Cabernet lineup up to Astral. A separate Cabernet Unveiled tasting with winemaker Tyler Thomas or assistant winemaker Niko Comati pours from the barrel. Star Lane's Tock page lists a Cave Tour & Tasting at $120 per person, prepaid, for parties of 2 to 7 (book on Tock). The waiting list and the Tock page don't quite agree, so if Tock shows no dates, join the list. Start at starlanevineyard.com or call (805) 697-1459.
Can't get in? Dierberg's tasting room on Drum Canyon Road in the Sta. Rita Hills is open seven days, pours a five-wine, $35 tasting that introduces both family estates, Star Lane included, and takes walk-ins when there's room (dierbergvineyard.com). It's on the far western side of the valley, so it fits a Sta. Rita Hills day better than a Happy Canyon one.
Happy Canyon Vineyard at Piocho Ranch
The namesake estate, and the one that rewards buying wine. Its 75-minute visit is a vineyard tour followed by six wines with appetizers, seven days a week by appointment. Book about two weeks ahead; it doesn't take same-day requests. It's $65 per person for three or more (waived with a two-bottle purchase per fee) or $80 per person for two (waived with three bottles per fee). The ranch also rents cottages for overnight stays. Contact (805) 203-0749 or happycanyonvineyard.com.
Polo Classic: Happy Canyon Vineyard presents the Santa Ynez Valley Polo Classic, benefiting People Helping People, at Piocho Ranch, usually on a late-June Saturday from 11am to 3pm. The 2026 edition, the 13th, was June 27 and sold out. Tickets, sold through the winery, included tented seating, polo, a ranch BBQ lunch and Happy Canyon wines. The 2027 date isn't announced; see our valley events calendar.
Cult and club-only producers (no visits)
One famous Happy Canyon-area estate doesn't take visitors at all. You can't taste there, so here's how to get the wine instead.
Two Wolves Wine (P!nk's estate)
No tastings, no tours. Two Wolves is the family estate of Alecia Moore, the singer P!nk, and her husband Carey Hart, who bought it in 2013 (Wine Spectator; Berry Bros. & Rudd). Its contact page says plainly: "Not open to the public." The vineyard sits on the Happy Canyon border, inside the Los Olivos District AVA, per a winemaker note from Lindquist Family Wines, which buys fruit there. Moore is founder and winemaker, with co-winemaker Alison Thomson, and farms about 25 certified organic acres. The lineup runs to Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Syrah, Graciano, Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, a rosé and a red blend called Group Song.
How to get the wine: join "the Tribe" on twowolveswine.com. Sign-ups go onto a waitlist first. Members get allocation offers in three releases a year (spring, fall and winter), one package each, first come, first served. The winery says it doesn't make enough for everyone, and once you're off the waitlist, offers depend on seniority, engagement and purchase history. It ships only to listed states; California is one.
Where to drink it in the valley: the winery's own find our wine page lists Bell's and Full of Life in Los Alamos, Bar Le Côte in Los Olivos and The Gathering Table in Solvang. Lists change, so ask when you book.
Insider note (Tony Michael, Oct 17, 2026): the club list is packed and releases usually sell out. Get on the waitlist now rather than hoping for a bottle on the day.
For other list-only names, such as Sea Smoke in the Sta. Rita Hills, see our cult wineries guide.
Also from Happy Canyon: Ad Ripa, Justin Willett's Cabernet label with no tasting room. See our side labels guide.
Can you stay overnight at a Happy Canyon winery?
Yes, at two estates. Both are booked by inquiry or direct with the winery, not through a hotel desk.
- La Tarantella at Grassini Family Vineyards: a private villa the Grassini family owns on its estate, set among the vineyards and just across the creek bed from the winery. It has five bedrooms, each with a king bed and an en suite bathroom, plus living rooms, gardens, patios and a plunge pool. Grassini's site lists private chef dinners, in-villa spa services and a concierge who can arrange private tastings at the winery and transportation as add-ons; a tasting isn't listed as included. No nightly rate, minimum stay or maximum guest count is published, and there is no online calendar: inquire on the La Tarantella site (its contact form covers overnight stays as well as events). Grassini wine club members get preferred rates. The villa also hosts events of up to 200 guests, so ask whether your dates clash with one.
- Piocho Ranch Farm Stay at Happy Canyon Vineyard: four cottages and a four-bedroom Vineyard House on the polo ranch, booked direct with the winery; a vineyard and wine experience can be added. See the listing on our winery stays guide.
Every other winery stay in the valley, with sleeps, rates and pet rules, is on stay at a winery in the Santa Ynez Valley.
Can you taste Happy Canyon wine without an appointment?
Not in Happy Canyon itself. Your two options are in town: Grassini's Santa Barbara room at 24 El Paseo (daily noon to 5pm, reservations encouraged, flights from $30), and Dierberg's Drum Canyon tasting room, which pours Star Lane Bordeaux varietals and takes walk-ins when it can. For walk-in tasting closer to Happy Canyon, see Santa Ynez wineries and Los Olivos wine tasting.
What is the Happy Canyon AVA?
Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara is an American Viticultural Area at the far eastern edge of the Santa Ynez Valley, approved by the federal Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau on Nov 9, 2009. The Santa Barbara County Vintners describe a warmer, inland climate that ripens late varieties, elevations from 500 to over 3,400 feet and soils suited to Bordeaux grapes: Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Sauvignon Blanc. Their advice for visitors: come for the views, "but call ahead for access to these exclusive vineyards."
Make a day of it: Cold Spring Tavern, Cachuma, Happy Canyon
From Santa Barbara, take Highway 154. Lunch at Cold Spring Tavern (14.5 mi, 22 min from downtown), an hour at Lake Cachuma (9.8 mi, 16 min on), then a 3:30pm or 4pm tasting at Crown Point (8.4 mi, 18 min from the lake). Dinner is in Santa Ynez, 5.4 mi, 14 min away. Drive times are without traffic. The full timetable, with a version that starts in the valley so you can make Grassini's 11am to 3pm estate hours, is on our Cold Spring Tavern guide.
Want a zip line instead? Highline Adventures is 11.4 mi, 24 min from Crown Point.
