Make a day of it

Around The Inn at Mattei's Tavern

The hotel gate opens onto downtown Los Olivos: most Grand Avenue tasting rooms are a 4- to 6-minute walk, and the resort fee already covers cruiser bikes for the farther ones. Here's how an insider would fill a day from the porch.

  1. MorningCoffee at Queen Cup, the Airstream caravan by St. Mark's, from 7am daily.
  2. MiddayStart at Brewer-Clifton, Greg Brewer's Sta. Rita Hills room (walk-ins welcome), then Stolpman for limestone-grown estate wines.
  3. LunchBar Le Côte serves seafood straight through from noon, Wednesday to Sunday, with happy hour 3 to 5pm. Picnic instead? Panino is a 5-minute walk.
  4. NightLos Olivos goes quiet after dinner. For a late one, Maverick Saloon in Santa Ynez is 11 minutes by car and open until 2am on Friday and Saturday.

What does the Mattei's Tavern resort fee include?

$75 per room, per night, and the hotel lists exactly what it covers: valet or self-parking, daily activities and wellness classes, the gym and Movement Studio, cruiser bikes, rides in the Mercedes-Benz house cars, nightly turndown, in-room coffee and water, and a welcome drink. The bikes and house cars matter most here, because downtown Los Olivos, with more than 35 tasting rooms by the hotel's count, is a short ride or walk.

Can you eat at Mattei's Tavern without staying?

Yes. The Tavern is recommended in the 2026 Michelin Guide, serves three meals a day and books dinner on OpenTable. Executive chef Kevin Malone calls his menu reimagined classics and works with area producers such as Motley Crew butcher in Buellton for custom sausages, per Auberge's own story on him. Felix Feed & Coffee does barista coffee and scratch-made pastries daily. The Shed is the poolside bar for guests. See our Tavern restaurant page and Michelin round-up.

How much is the Lavender Barn spa?

Treatments start at $299 for 60 minutes (massage, deep tissue, facials) and run to $505 for 90-minute rituals and $598 for a 60-minute couple's massage, per the current menu. Lavender Barn has a eucalyptus steam room, cold plunge, vitality pool, oak wood sauna and relaxation room. On Wednesdays, guests, members and residents save 20% on 60 and 90-minute treatments; call 805.693.2620 to book.

How much is a wedding at Mattei's Tavern?

The hotel doesn't publish wedding pricing. It hosts weddings in historic indoor and outdoor venues, with in-house planning; ask the events team for a quote. Going as a guest? Our wedding guest guide covers room blocks, rides and what to do the morning after.

Mattei's, Mattie's or Maddie's?

All three are this place. Regulars say "Maddy's." A Santa Barbara wedding photographer who shoots here spells it out as Mattei's Tavern, "pronounced 'Maddy's'", and executive chef Kevin Malone introduces himself on Keith Saarloos's Chopping It Up podcast (episode 47) as "the executive chef at Maddie's Tavern." On paper the restaurant often goes by Mattie's Tavern: Auberge's own press release for the November 2022 reopening calls it that, and so does the podcast's episode page. The hotel's full name is The Inn at Mattei's Tavern, Auberge Collection, at 2350 Railway Avenue.

The family name came first: the Mattei family opened it in 1886 as the Central Hotel, a stagecoach stop, before it took their name.

What is the history of Mattei's Tavern?

The inn dates to 1886, when it opened as a stagecoach stop for travelers arriving by rail and stage. The hotel says original cottages and heritage buildings still stand, and today it's part of the Auberge Collection.
