Are there guided tours of La Purísima Mission?

Yes. Public guided tours run Saturday at 11am and 1pm, and Wednesday to Sunday at 1pm. They last about 90 minutes and walk the 1-mile loop of mission buildings and grounds, on dirt paths with rustic doorways and a few steps. Meet at the visitor center before the start. School programs for 2026–27 are fully booked (there's a waitlist).

What is there to see at La Purísima?

State Parks calls it "the most completely restored Mission in California." It describes the main church, the Padre's Chapel, the five-acre historic garden around a fountain and corrals of burros, horses, longhorn cattle, sheep and goats. There are trails too, open from 6am. The friends group runs La Tienda gift shop: Wednesday to Friday 10am to 3pm, weekends 10am to 4pm, closed Monday and Tuesday.

What is the history of La Purísima Mission?

Father Fermín Lasuén founded Misión la Purísima Concepción de María Santísima on Dec 8, 1787, on Chumash land. Earthquakes and rain destroyed the first buildings in 1812, and Father Payeras had it rebuilt in its current linear layout, with adobe walls four and a half feet thick. In February 1824 a revolt that began at Mission Santa Inés spread here. After secularization in 1834, the buildings passed through private owners and fell into ruin. Union Oil later deeded parcels to Santa Barbara County in 1933, per State Parks.

What events are on at La Purísima?

The Winter Concert is Dec 12, 2026 at 7pm: the Lompoc Master Chorale among candle-lit lanterns, with proceeds supporting the mission animals. Tickets are on sale through the friends group, Prelado de los Tesoros. The park also hosts weddings in four venues (event line 805-733-3713).
