Lompoc beaches: Surf Beach, Point Sal, Ocean Park and Jalama

Wild Pacific sand for long walks, launch views, and a dog rule that flips with the seasons

Surf Beach is the easy pick, and leashed dogs are welcome October through February. From March 1 to September 30, Vandenberg limits the beach to about half a mile for nesting snowy plovers and bans dogs; in 2026 the rules ended early, on Sept 11. Point Sal is a long hike; Jalama has camping.

Are dogs allowed at Surf Beach in Lompoc?

Yes from October 1 through the end of February, on a leash. No from March 1 through September 30. Vandenberg's environmental page lists "Pets allowed on leash" for October to February. From March to September, when western snowy plovers nest on the sand, it bans pets and dogs, horses, campfires, windsurfing, parasailing and kites. In its Feb 27, 2026 release, the base said leashed dogs can use the trail between Surf Beach and Ocean Park, east of the nesting area, "but they are not allowed within the open section of Surf Beach during the plover nesting season."

You'll often read that dogs are never allowed at Surf Beach, all year. Vandenberg's own pages say otherwise.

The season can end early. In 2026 the base reopened all of Surf, Wall and Minuteman beaches on Friday, Sept 11, because the plover chicks had fledged ("Vandenberg Opens All Beaches," posted Sept 10, 2026; reported by Edhat and KSBY). Pets still have to be leashed, and camping, beach fires, fireworks, ATVs and feeding wildlife are still out. The posted season starts again on March 1, so check the base's page if you're going in early spring.

Is Surf Beach open, and where do you park?

As of Oct 17, 2026, Vandenberg's environmental page lists Surf Beach as open. You reach it from the Lompoc-Surf Amtrak station at Ocean Avenue and Park Road, at the west end of Highway 246. Pacific Surfliner says the station is "steps from Surf Beach," with same-day parking ("fees may apply") and no overnight parking.

Hours don't match between the two official pages: the Feb 2026 release says sunrise to sunset, and the environmental page says 8am to 6pm daily. Arrive after 8am and leave by sunset and you're inside both.

Rules that apply all year, per Vandenberg: no fishing at Surf Beach (a state regulation), no drones, camping, fireworks or ATVs, and stay 100 yards from marine mammals. Campfires need a permit from October to February and aren't allowed from March to September. There are no lifeguards. During plover season only about half a mile of beach is open, and entering the closed areas can bring a fine of up to $5,000.

The base can also close the beach for security. Explore Lompoc lists Surf Beach as a launch-viewing spot "if it's open and not closed for security reasons"; see our launch viewing guide.

Can you surf in Lompoc?

You can, but know the water. These are open Pacific beaches with no lifeguards. At Surf Beach, Vandenberg bans windsurfing and parasailing (and kites) from March to September; it doesn't list a ban on board surfing. There have been two fatal great white shark attacks at Surf Beach: bodyboarder Lucas Ransom on Oct 22, 2010, and surfer Francisco Javier Solorio Jr. on Oct 23, 2012, per Noozhawk. Pacific Surfliner's own station page calls the area "famous for great white shark sightings."

State Parks says swimming at Point Sal is not recommended because of rip currents and shark sightings. For a surf weekend with a campsite and a grill, Jalama is the practical base; see our Jalama Beach guide.

Searching "Lompoc Surf" for the train? The Lompoc-Surf station on Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner is the one at the beach, about 10 miles west of downtown.

What is at Ocean Park (Ocean Beach Park)?

Ocean Beach County Park, usually called Ocean Park, is the picnic stop: the county lists restrooms, barbecue grills, benches and picnic tables, a playground, beach access and bird watching. It's at 6851 Ocean Park Road, 13 miles west of Lompoc by the county's count: take Highway 246 nearly to the coast, then turn right on Ocean Park Road. County hours are 8am to sunset (Vandenberg's release says sunrise to sunset for the beach side). The county bought the site in 1913.

Two catches. From March 1 to September 30 there's no beach access from the park, and the county says fishing "is prohibited at all times." Explore Lompoc calls Ocean Park the closest public launch-viewing spot, about four miles from the launch site, and says the road closes when the lot fills. Call County Parks at 805-568-2460. For open sand, Surf Beach is 2.2 miles (9 min) away by road.

How do you get to Point Sal, and how long is the hike?

Only on foot. State Parks says access to Point Sal State Beach is via Brown Road, with no civilian access through Vandenberg. The Santa Barbara County Trails Council puts the trailhead at the locked gate at the west end of Brown Road, off Highway 1 south of Guadalupe. There's no lot: park on the roadside without blocking the gate.

The Trails Council describes about 12 miles round trip with roughly 1,200 feet of climbing, moderate to strenuous: through farmland, up to a ridge that tops out around 1,250 feet, then sharply down to Paradise Beach. Trail apps give shorter numbers (5.2 miles and about 10), so plan for the long version. It's pedestrian only: no bikes, horses, motor vehicles or camping. Pack out what you bring in.

Bring all your water. State Parks lists no tables, toilets or other facilities and doesn't recommend swimming. Dogs are allowed on the trail but not on the beach. Hours are sunrise to sunset, and the park says Vandenberg may close or clear the area for launches, and the Trails Council warns of temporary closures for military operations. Call (805) 733-3713 if a launch is scheduled. In spring, State Parks notes giant coreopsis in bloom; sea lions use Lion Rock offshore.

From Solvang the trailhead is 43.2 miles (66 min); from Lompoc City Hall, 31.9 miles (50 min). Old Town Lompoc is 49 minutes back for dinner.

What about Jalama Beach?

Jalama Beach County Park is the only one of the four with camping and a store. Day use is $10 per vehicle, 6am to sunset; dogs are welcome on a leash of 6 feet or shorter; and the Jalama Beach Store grill, home of the Jalama Burger, runs 9:30am to 4:30pm (from Sept 27, 2026). It's 19.3 miles (42 min) from Lompoc City Hall, the last 14.5 on Jalama Road. Reservations, fees and the burger are in our Jalama Beach guide.
