AJ Spurs menu: what to order

The value is in what comes free. The menu says every dinner includes A.J.'s Hearty Vaquero Soup, tequila beans and homemade salsa ("yep, mix'em all together"), a garden salad, A.J.'s spuds, rice pilaf, French garlic bread, and a root beer float or an after-dinner liqueur. So order one main each and nothing else:

• Oak Pit BBQ top sirloin: $36.50 (8 oz) or $39.99 (12 oz). The straightforward order.
• Filet mignon: $46.50 (6 oz) or $55.99 (10 oz).
• The Gambler ($62.99): 35 oz of top sirloin, for the table's biggest appetite or to share.
• The Chuckwagon ($51.99): a 6 oz top sirloin, four St. Louis pork ribs and four scampi shrimp, the sampler.
• Twin Peaks (listed at $69.99): two bacon-wrapped 6 oz filets, one with lobster and Hollandaise, one with shrimp and Béarnaise. The menu calls it "The Ultimate Steak Oscar" and marks it market price, so confirm the price when you order.
• BBQ ribs: St. Louis pork or beef back, from $35.99 a half rack.

The log dining hall

AJ Spurs' Buellton dining hall is a "massive log structure" that opened in April 1990, according to Discover Buellton, the city's visitor guide. Inside, it tells the story of the land around Buellton, named for Rufus Thompson Buell. It's a saloon and a dining hall under one roof, and the town's big-group dinner: our wedding guest guide lists it for groups.

Three AJ Spurs, now two

Buellton's AJ Spurs is the younger sibling. The first one opened on South Main Street in Templeton in 1989, and Milt Guggia, who also owned Pea Soup Andersen's, bought all the AJ Spurs restaurants in 2006, according to property records cited by the San Luis Obispo Tribune. Templeton's building sold in December 2020 and the original closed after more than 30 years, leaving Buellton and Grover Beach. Both still take bookings on its site.
