Is Pea Soup Andersen's in Buellton still open?

Restaurant closed; cleared for partial demolition. The inn next door is open. Buellton (376 Avenue of Flags) · Closed January 2024; demolition approved July 9, 2026

The restaurant closed without warning in January 2024, months before its 100th anniversary, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. On Thursday, July 9, 2026, the Buellton City Council voted 5-0 to remove the property's city landmark status (Resolution 26-22), which lets the owner tear down most of the complex. The two-story 1928 Bueltmore Hotel section stays, and the signs, stained-glass windows and Hap-Pea and Pea-Wee artwork are to be salvaged. When the Chronicle reported the vote on July 14, no demolition date had been set; on August 9, 2026, the Santa Barbara News-Press still described the "deteriorated and vandalized iconic former restaurant," with the vote "clearing the way for most of its removal." We haven't found a published report that demolition has started. Pea Soup Andersen's Inn, the 98-room hotel next door at 51 E. Hwy 246, is a separate business and says it is "open as usual." The other Pea Soup Andersen's, in Santa Nella on I-5, was still open when NPR covered the closure in January 2024.

Go here instead: Lunch in Buellton: Industrial Eats or Hitching Post 2 for dinner. To stay, Pea Soup Andersen's Inn is open and serves a free breakfast with Danish pastries. All options: Buellton restaurants.

What happened to Succulent Café in Solvang?

Closed; the space is now The Gathering Table. Solvang (1555 Mission Drive) · Closed 2022; Campo del Sol 2022–2023; The Gathering Table since July 2024

Two stories circulate about this space, and both are true, in order. The family-run Succulent Café closed in 2022. The team behind Coast Range took the keys on August 15, 2022 and opened Campo del Sol, a Mexican restaurant with a cantina-style bar, that September. Siteline reported Campo del Sol "indefinitely closed" in August 2023. Chef Budi Kazali, formerly of the Ballard Inn, then reopened his Gathering Table here, with a soft opening on July 27 and 28, 2024 (Noozhawk). The Gathering Table's own site says it revived the restaurant "in the space of the former Succulent Café."

Go here instead: Go to The Gathering Table: dinner Sunday to Thursday 5pm–9pm, Friday and Saturday to 9:30pm, and brunch Saturday and Sunday 10am–2pm, per its site.

Is The Bear and Star in Los Olivos still open?

Closed; the space is now Nella Kitchen & Bar. Los Olivos (Fess Parker Wine Country Inn, 2860 Grand Avenue) · Opened May 2017; closed end of 2019; Nella opened September 2020

The Bear and Star was the Fess Parker family's "refined ranch cuisine" restaurant inside the Fess Parker Wine Country Inn, with chef John Cox and beef from the family ranch. Ashley Parker Snider announced in October 2019 that it would close at the end of that year (Santa Barbara Independent; santabarbara.com). The team behind S.Y. Kitchen opened Nella Kitchen & Bar in the space in September 2020, and the inn's own site now lists dining at Nella. Before The Bear and Star, the same room housed Petros, Restaurant Marcella and Wine Cask, per santabarbara.com. Petros now runs a separate winery and restaurant on Foxen Canyon Road.

Go here instead: Go to Nella Kitchen & Bar, daily from 11:30am, or Petros Winery & Restaurant, Thursday to Sunday. All options: Los Olivos restaurants.

What happened to the Royal Scandinavian Inn?

Renamed Hotel Corque in 2009; now Corque Hotel, a Marriott Tribute Portfolio hotel. Solvang (400 Alisal Road) · Renamed January 2009; Marriott since July 2025

The Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians bought Solvang's largest hotel in 2007 and renamed it Hotel Corque in January 2009 during a full remodel (Lompoc Record). It was the base for the Discovery Channel cycling team, formerly the U.S. Postal team, at its January camps: in 2007 the Lompoc Record wrote that team members "stay in the Royal Scandinavian Inn." In July 2025 the tribe announced Corque had joined Marriott Bonvoy's Tribute Portfolio.

What's still open that people think closed?

Two answers. Pea Soup Andersen's Inn in Buellton is open, and says so on its homepage. Hotel Corque is the old Royal Scandinavian Inn under a new name. If a listing gives an address on Mission Drive, 1st Street or Bell Street that doesn't match this page, check the business's own site before you drive.

How we check, and how to report a closure

We take each status from the business's own website first, then from regional press (Noozhawk, the Santa Maria Times and Lompoc Record, the Santa Maria Sun, the San Francisco Chronicle, Siteline). Directory sites and review sites are only leads; we never repeat their ratings or reviews. A rumored closure stays off this page until a business or a reporter confirms it. Spot one we missed? Tell us and we'll check it.

Good to know

Is Mirabelle Inn in Solvang open? No. As of Oct 17, 2026, Mirabelle Inn's site says it is under full renovation and will relaunch as Solvang Haus under new ownership, with a late 2026 timeline. Bookings are unavailable. The Winston and King Frederik Inn are the closest small hotels to Solvang Park.

Is First & Oak in Solvang still open? No. First & Oak was the restaurant inside Mirabelle Inn, and the inn says the on-site restaurant will not reopen. For dinner nearby, The Gathering Table, Mad & Vin and Coast Range all take reservations.

Has Pea Soup Andersen's been torn down? Buellton approved demolition of most of the complex on July 9, 2026, keeping the 1928 Bueltmore Hotel section. The San Francisco Chronicle reported on July 14 that no demolition date had been set, and we haven't found a report that work has started.

What happened to Succulent Café in Solvang? It closed in 2022. Campo del Sol, a Mexican restaurant from the Coast Range team, opened in the space that September and closed in 2023. Chef Budi Kazali reopened The Gathering Table there in July 2024.

Can you still taste Brewer-Clifton or Pali wines in Lompoc? Only by appointment. Brewer-Clifton's public tasting room is in Los Olivos, and its Lompoc winery does private tastings. Pali closed its Wine Ghetto room in 2025 and offers guided tastings at its winery by request.

What was Hotel Corque called before? The Royal Scandinavian Inn. The Chumash tribe bought it in 2007 and renamed it Hotel Corque in January 2009. It is now Corque Hotel, Solvang, A Tribute Portfolio Hotel, on Marriott.
